Would rate it higher if I could. It was an amazing experience. Guides were great, food amazing, met some cool people, kayak 3 times a day. And orcas! Was sad to leave.

I booked the Orca Camp package for myself, my husband, and his two parents (in their sixties). Some notes from our stay:

The Great:
- We saw tons of orcas right next to the shores of the camp. The location is really amazing, it's right next to where the Orca would enter the straight so they're really impossible to miss and come very close. This particular company isn't as good with advertising/search engine optimization as other companies. The price is not reflective of the experience. I recommend going on Morning and Evening kayaks, as that is when we saw orca most frequently. One group of orca even came so close the folks on the kayaks got scared.

- Hot Tub, Sauna, Tents, and Food were all superb. There's a review somewhere here that says the company didn't feed people enough. I don't know if that used to be true but they've definitely over-corrected. DO NOT bring your own snacks, unless you have allergies something. You will never eat them.

- The guides were amazing. Our lead guide was Ben, the others were Anne and Laura. Bender was the guide that served as a cook, and he was truly so good he never got a chance to go out onto the water. People just wanted to keep him in the kitchen. Everybody was really nice and accommodating. I could not kayak at the beginning of the trip, but the instructions they gave worked really well, and I was able to keep up towards the end. At one point Ben even towed me, and I was amazed he could drag all that weight and still stay a little ahead of the rest of the group. He's like a one-man tug boat.

The Okay:
- Toilets. Guys, you're in the woods, in a protected area. Normal plumbing is not allowed. There are two composting toilets for guests, one had a door and actually smelled great (like cedar? pine? some kind of wood). The other one had no door and smelled terrible. I'm just amazed both of them were kept clean the entire time and at least one had a pleasant scent. However, unless you can't smell and are an exhibitionist, stick with the toilet that has a door.

The Bad:
- Mosquitos. They're there, and killing them doesn't make a difference. because new ones spawn in their place. They didn't really bite at night unless the previous day was warm, but they made up for it during the day. Some guests brought tools zap the bites to remove the itch, and to electrocute the mosquitos. I recommend you buy them as well, it will make you very popular with the other guests. The second to last night we were all playing with the murder tennis racquet. There was a massacre in the dining hall that night.

- Mice. The tents are not mice proof, there is nothing securing the walls to the floor. I recommend using rocks to weigh down all 4 sides of the tent, and not leaving any gaps between the rocks that a very small mouse could get through. If you do this, and don't eat in your tent, they should leave you alone. If you don't, you can 100% expect to have extra roommates with you at night.

- Damp. After the first paddle, nothing you wear will be dry again for the rest of the trip. It is so cold and so humid that between paddling sessions, even overnight, clothes don't have a chance to dry. Also the water is salty and lots of people got salt crusts on their clothes. Some of us hung stuff in the dining tent around the cast iron stove, which actually worked pretty well, but there were only 11 of us on this tour and there wasn't space for everybody. So if you don't like putting on damp clothes I recommend buying something that is completely impermeable to water and fits over shoes and goes up to your upper waist, or have a different set of clothes for every paddle (10 paddles total if you do all of them)

- Waves. Mid-day paddles had the most rough water, although nothing dramatic enough to tip your kayak if you're paddling correctly. However, the waves will be more than enough to give you a wicked case of sea sickness. Bring dramamine or patches, if you want to be able to go on all of the paddles.

That's all! This is a great company, with great accommodations, just know that even with all of the luxuries it's still camping. If you love camping, you will adore this experience.

Hey Sophia, Thank you for taking the time to share this detailed review and feedback from your time at orca camp. It gives prospective guests a great idea of different variables at camp, and some feedback for us that perhaps one of the toilet needs a little love before next season! So happy to hear you had a great time and that the food and guide team were great.

I really truly love this company! Who they are and what they do. They love what they do & it shows and they love sharing this magical experience and place with others. They have to do all of that while dealing with nature, weather & wild animals ( and people!! The other wild animals lol ) who don’t always cooperate. But if you are open to an authentically immersive experience that won’t be ruined if you don’t see orcas (because that happens!) then prepare yourself for jaw dropping beauty, good food and great company!
My first trip with them ( June 2023) was an expedition and we had high winds, hard paddling & very little wildlife.
I then took my grandson in Aug 2023, to Orca Camp and made some fantastic memories together there! We started off with Thunder, Lightning & Rain . We hiked, painted, read, polar dipped, then thawed out in the hot tub and sauna ! Best Rainy Day Ever! Then we had glassy waters, beautiful skies & wildlife galore!
A Huge Thank you to Our Guides : Maria, Jeremy & Laura who really add to the awesomeness of the experience and to the camp chef, Jeff who fed us SO well!

Wonderful time at Orca Camp. Our guides Ana, Ben and Laura were fantastic. They went above and beyond to ensure our experience was a memorable one. All are very knowledgeable about the orcas and the area in general. Chef Rob outdid himself every day on all our meals. If you go hungry here, it is entirely your own fault as food is ample. We brought our own snacks just in case and ate none of it. We saw orcas every day, which was amazing! Also saw sea lions and bald eagles. I loved watching the salmon jumping in the water. Being able to completely disconnect from outside world and enjoy the beauty of camp was amazing. I would recommend loose fitting clothes as the mosquitoes here are no joke. I wore yoga pants one day and my legs were covered in bites, as these buggers can bite thru pants. Morning and evening paddles were my favorite. Definitely worth getting up at 6 am for the first paddle. Loved our experience!

Did 3-day Discovery Islands guided tour. Excellent guiding and food prep by Nova. The kayaks were very well-maintained and fit everyone well. Camping gear was good too. We all ate well and slept well. Nobody capsized and everyone had a good time, group of 6 plus guide. Highly recommended. If I can take more time away from work, I’d have done the 6-day tour but I’m more than satisfied with this short trip.

We recently participated in the Orca Camp and felt quite disappointed.

For us, participating in the Orca Camp was supposed to be a dream come true for which we made many sacrifices. From the Wildcoast website, we got the impression that this is a territory where many whales reside and that we would be able to not only see, but also kayak close to them. We only found out at the camp that by BC law you are not allowed to come any closer than 200 meters to a whale, which makes it hard to even spot/see them without binoculars which a non-experienced kayaker would not be able to take on the water that easily. From the website we also got the impression that it is an advantage to be right next to the bio reserve and rubbing beaches, but only at camp we found out that this is a no-go zone that we are not allowed to enter and that the resident Orcas go there to rub and then swim back, meaning that they would likely not pass by our beach/waters. Given that the main reason for us to book the camp was being close to the Orcas, we felt very disappointed that there was essentially no difference to the other whale watching tours from a boat we’ve done over the past years.

We also thought that kayaking was the means to spot the whales. That the guides would be in contact with other guides, whale stations etc. to be able to direct guests on the water once an Orca/whale sighting has been communicated. Instead, we kayaked for the sake of kayaking and seemingly on the possibility of pure luck, meaning, if we see a whale great, if not, also great. We came to the camp to see Orcas and other whales, not to kayak for the sake of it which was a major disappointment. In our group we had some very fast participants who set the kayaking pace in a way that it was very difficult for inexperienced kayakers to keep up. We were so busy trying to catch up that we had little time to enjoy the surroundings and look for wildlife in and out of the water. We are all in good physical shape (200km off-road bicycle per week, HI step-aerobics classes 4-times a week), but still not able to keep up. Therefore, in my personal opinion, the information on the website saying that you don’t need prior kayaking experience should be re-considered. We definitely felt our lack of kayaking experience to be a major disadvantage as the guides seemed to focus on the pace of the strongest, not the weakest.

There were several situations where we were talked down to and made feel very unwelcome, especially by one of the guides which left a bitter taste. There was also a situation on the water where the wind suddenly changed and we were told to hurry in the wake of it getting dangerous – one would expect that given the changing conditions (and with many beginners in your group) you turn around and play it safe – instead, the guides decided to continue paddling to a farther beach for lunch that looked just like any other beach.

We also felt that there was no information exchange on whale sightings as the guides themselves seemed always super surprised when a whale or an Orca was spotted. They ran to the beach and took photographs in amazement, just as the guests did - which gave the impression that whale sightings are rather rare than frequent. One of the guides even said to us the first evening we were on the water and spotted an Orca from a distance that this was the first time he saw one on the water despite being in camp for 3 weeks at the time. And when we asked for the bears - which according to the website are frequent on the other side of camp (itinerary day 3) - we were told that they had seen a bear there only once. We appreciate that nature is unpredictable and we heard/read that Orca sightings this year have been less frequent than in previous years – yet, we feel that the information provided beforehand and the actual experience lived somewhat diverge.

Another major disappointment was the hospitality service. We always say “You get what you pay for” and in this case we paid a lot for a gourmet style catering. What we received really fell short of what was communicated. Only on day 1 of breakfast, there was fruit on top of the actual “buffet” (the buffet consisted out of two items: Yoghurt and granola). Also, only on day 1 there was jam and peanut butter (NO bread was provided on the “buffet” on ANY of the days). Apart from that you will get one plate with either pancakes, or eggs or something else. That’s fine – as long as you eat what’s on that plate (e.g. we were not asked if we liked poached eggs, so on one of the days that meant no breakfast for us as the plate consisted out of a poached egg with meat on a bagel). Also, on day 2 and 3, there were no juices at breakfast. Just water, coffee and tea. We had to go and ask for the juice on both days.

For lunch we had a sandwich each day - which was fine, but it was definitely not gourmet. It was exactly like the food I had back at university when I had no money and had to go as cheap as I could: Toast, lettuce, tomato, mayo. Especially during lunch, we were reminded loudly and repeatedly by the guides that we could only have ONE sandwich and ONE cookie, no more - unless there was leftover for seconds. We felt like we were being told off because we were eyeballing with another cookie that seemed however meticulously counted.

During a rainy day that forced us to stay at camp, I went to the cook in between breakfast and lunch to ask if I could have a cookie with my tea. The answer he gave me was: "We will have them at lunch, but if you want yours now, I give it to you. Just don’t take one at lunch then." I believe my jaw dropped all the way to the floor … we pay 2k per person for a 4-day gourmet catering and I’m not even able to get a simple cookie because they are counted?????

Before we left for the camp, we checked the weather conditions and we knew we would be very unlucky with the weather. We packed accordingly and were prepared for it - but we felt that the camp wasn’t. Though they must have known that we would be likely trapped in camp for at least a day, there was just the usual coffee and tea - no creative ideas to make the waiting more comfortable and interesting for guests such as providing s’mores to make over the fire. They even ran out of white color to paint stones, so the guests painting could not even paint Orcas anymore.

The walkway to the toilet was completely dark at night - yes, there were solar lamps, but they went off before midnight. So, when you had to go to the toilet in the middle of the night - if rainy and slippery or not - you had to pay extreme attention with your head lamp to not trap and fall besides the discomfort of walking away and steep uphill from camp into the forest where apparently cougars and bears were sighted.

Before coming to camp, we were asked by the team of Wildcoast Adventures if we would like to fish - we therefore applied and paid for a license. When we got to camp, we had to ask if we could fish as nobody seemed to be aware. The answer we received was “We have to see what we have”. We then had to ask again and again until finally one evening, for the evening paddle, there was a fishing group that went out for 1 hour. We wanted to go again the next day, but were told there was not enough demand, so he couldn’t go. That’s another 30 CAD blown in the wind.

As we were very unlucky with the weather, we spent a lot of time in the community tent as our own tents were cold and humid (we’re not blaming anyone for that. That’s just nature). But again, we had to ask for the fire to be put on rather than the guides taking the lead and thinking ahead that guests must be cold sitting in the cold. On the rainy day, we sat for dinner in the tent without any fire. It was freezing. Only after someone asked, it was put on. By that time dessert was served. In other words: There was no cozy atmosphere at all. It was cold, wet and chilly.

The atmosphere in general wasn’t really welcoming and guest friendly. I have been a sponsorship and hospitality lead in two different motorsports teams for over a decade, so working with guests is my daily business. The first thing I do when I see a guest or a guest group in the morning is to say: “Good morning.” There was nothing of that when we came in the tent for breakfast. There was also no asking of: “How was your night?” “How is your experience so far?” “Is there anything we can do to make your experience better?” … I felt there was 0 interest and the reason could be that the guides were so busy running the camp that there was no time to be attentive with guests. We felt that all guides worked hard - nobody was lazy - but it felt like they had no time to look after guests because of their immense workload. So, there was no time for “Hello”, “How are you” etc. That’s definitely not how you imagine a premium guest experience. For that to happen, probably another guide or two would be needed. That would also allow to split the groups when kayaking to avoid the immense pressure of having to race.

There were also a couple of minor things that however stood out. The towel by the sink that was being used by 16 guests and 4 guides was the same over the entire duration of the camp - not only was it used by 20 people for 4 days, it also hung there in the rain and became soaking wet. We had our own towels, just like it was asked on the website, but I did not plan on taking my towel to the restroom every time only to then take it to the opposite site of camp to wash my hands … I also didn’t plan to take my towel to the meals to dry my hands thereafter. This one is just a very tiny remark - but given that the cleanliness and covid safety are advertised, this is a remark to be made.

Some general things to be aware of that are just part of Orca Camp being located in the forest and close to the sea.

First: Your tent (and with it your bedding and your clothes) will be damp, especially in the night and in the morning. If it is a hot and dry day, you will be okay during the day, but it will become damp during the night. If it is rainy, your tent interior and with it your clothes and bedding will be humid with no chance to dry. Be prepared to wear wet clothes and sleep in a damp bed. That’s not a criticism, just something to be aware of.

Second: Mice. You will be told not to leave any food, cables etc. openly around because the mice will come for it. The mice will also come when you don’t do that. The tents have many openings (they are tents … so totally normal that they do), so mice will get inside them, no matter what you do. We had a mouse on the bedside table, directly next to our head on two of the three nights. Again – no criticism, this is just nature and if you camp in wildlife territory, this is what to expect. So be aware: Mice will likely be present in your tent, if you leave your food out or not.

To sum up our experience, we left deeply disappointed and also somewhat shocked that we have spent so much money on something that did not come anywhere close to what we expected. We understand that we cannot influence nature and with it, whale sightings, but the impression we perceived from the experience compared to the actual experience we lived was quite different. If we had known about the BC law that requires you to stay away 200 m from the whales, the intensity of the kayaking, the focus on recreational sports rather than whale watching, the hurtful behavior of particularly one of the guides and the shortfall on (premium) catering, we would have not booked Orca Camp. We tried to make the most out of the experience nevertheless, but taken all together, we cannot recommend this experience and hope that the detailed and honest review helps you to make an informed decision with information we wish we would have had at the time.

Lastly, there is to say that we have shared all our thoughts with the Team at Wildcoast. We have taken several hours to draft a transparent, honest and detailed email to them. They did reply to us, saying that they are sorry and that they are trying their best to deliver a great experience. They also sent a link that states that Orca sightings have been fewer this year than in previous years. But that’s about it. So, on the positive side: They have replied to us. On the negative side: We felt the email was rather generic, offered no answer to some of the major issues (e.g. the rude behavior of one of their staff) and fitted perfectly in the overall disappointing experience we had.

Hello, I am sorry to hear that you felt our private response we had sent did not adequately address your concerns with your feedback from your Orca Camp trip. As stated previously, we would like to thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us. We always want to hear honest feedback from our guests to ensure that we are providing the best possible service and experience, and never want to see someone go home disappointed. I would like to offer our sincerest apologies that you felt the trip did not live up to your expectations. You have pointed out multiple things here that we fell short on during your tour, and for that I would like to apologize. There is some valuable feedback here that has since been addressed with the guide team. The reality with wildlife is we are unable to guarantee sightings and never truly know when and if we will see them. That being said, if we were not confident in the wildlife in our area, we would not advertise what we could see. We never want to set unrealistic expectations, however it does ultimately happen sometimes. On your tour the group had sightings both from shore and on the water while paddling. It does not surprise me that the guide ran to the beach to take pictures, they do this job because they are passionate about the wildlife and are genuinely thrilled each and every time they see whales, regardless of the frequency. I will share the blog post again here that you referred too. It was written by Orca Lab, a whale research organization located near our camp. In the post it highlights that this year has been a strange one for orca sightings, which have been far less than in previous years! https://orcalab.org/blog/summary-july-25-29th-2023/ Luckily sightings have improved over the course of the season! I would also like to point out that we have the Whale Watching guidelines posted right on our website, linked on the Orca Camp page. https://www.kayakbritishcolumbia.com/blog/magnificent-orca/ Respecting wildlife, and following guidelines (and communicating this) is at the center of every business decision we make, and we would never intentionally give someone the idea that we would operate outside of these laws. These are the same laws that every reputable whale watching company follows. Again, I would like to apologize that the paddling and the entire experience was disappointing for your family, I hope that you can see that we truly do care about our guests and do our very best to deliver an amazing experience.

We just returned from an amazing Glamping experience with Wildcoast Adventures. The Orca Camp was incredible! Cozy sheets and duvets in Glamping tents, fabulous gourmet meals prepared by a chef and served to us by our friendly guides. We had an opportunity to paddle 3 times a day. We were incredibly lucky to have several whale sightings. We saw a humpback on the 3 hour boat ride out to camp, and then Orca sightings on our first paddle and then last paddle of our stay to reward the 6am early risers who got out for the morning paddle in the rain. We caught up with the same pod who swam by the camp on our boat ride back to Quadra and coasted along side them for about 30 minutes or more. Our driver gave us plenty of opportunity to film and take photos and was very accommodating with our schedule.
The guides are friendly and knowledgeable and work incredibly hard in this remote location. I would highly recommend Wildcoast for your next kayaking adventure!! The food, the beds, a beautiful wood fire hot tub and sauna and the awesome guides provided a wonderful memorable experience!!
Keep in mind this is “Glamping” there is are outdoor composting toilets and an outdoor shower but they have made it as comfortable as possible and the guides do absolutely everything for you!
We loved it!!
Remember that they can’t guarantee Orca sightings as these are wild wonderful creatures but if you’re lucky to have them visit, it’s magical!!

Unexpected health issues, I was unsure whether I could handle this expedition.
So glad I went, reconnecting with my sister's, the beauty and wildness of Discovery Islands, the group of ladies we went with and the guides, made this experience truely awesome.
We had amazing weather, nothing but blue skies and sunshine.
The guides were attentive, intuitive, accommodating, and hardworking.
Thoroughly enjoyed Zoe's youthful energy, confidence, knowledge and humour.
My favorite part of the trip had to be seeing the Humpback whales, and just being out on the ocean and all the beauty it has to offer.
If I was to recommend anything it might be to have a 2 night layover at one of the campsites to explore, kayak, and chill.
Was alot of packing, unpacking, moving kayaks.
I felt a deep connection with the beauty of the island and hope to return.

So enjoyed this time with my sisters. Be prepared for rocky shores and moving kayaks, low tide and high tide. We paddled about 15!km a day but I did not find it too difficult. I am 66 and did do some prep physically, (rowing and squats!). The food and guides were excellent. And oh the whales and sea life! We had amazing weather which really helped. It was so nice not to worry about the little things and just enjoy kayaking and friendship. I highly recommend!

Wildcoast Adventures - Qué SABER antes de ir (ACTUALIZADO 2024) - Tripadvisor
