It just might not be the first time since the easing of the lockdown but it was wonderful for us to listen to the bells this morning - 29 July - after such a big gap.

Een Anglicaanse kerk uit het einde van de 19e eeuw aan de Noordkant van Plymouth in de wijk Tavistock. Mooi gebouw maar helaas afgesloten, dus niets van het waarschijnlijk sobere interieur gezien.

We attended an all age service, and were expecting coffee and tea to be available after the service - which it was - but not the not the Cava and cake that was also on offer. Not guaranteed every week! The service was relaxed and informal with a good number of children and adults of all ages.

The Cava won't be the every week (it was a special anniversary) but the warm welcome should be. Sorry I did not have a chance to meet you personally, but I look forward to meeting you next time. Every blessing, Tim

Very well attended, no obvious drunks, disappointingly few youngsters and fewer carols than our previous visits. Not wholly sure about the preachers approach, unusual current affairs analysis with good and bad columns eg Aleppo war crimes against reduction in acid rain. Also, as a non-communicant I may be unreasonable or out of touch but splitting the service with a very lengthy process of communion may have been great for those taking part but left large numbers in the church waiting for a chunk of time. A warm well lit church with mostly good views and effective acoustics. This year just a bit downbeat. Still like the bells.

Hi Jannerbloke,
Thanks for your review. There were probably fewer carols and children than your previous visits as it was Christmas eve midnight communion. We have our service of lessons and Carols on the Sunday before Christmas, which as Christmas fell on a Sunday this year, was the previous Sunday. Had you been there, you would have been part of a full church with plemty of Carols being led by our Community Choir. Next year you might also like to attend our Christmas eve afternoon Nativity service when, like this year, there should be no shortage of young families recalling the Christmas story. I am glad you found the church warm and well lit. Do make yourself known when you next visit us. It would be good to chat more.

The church sits back from the main road and is a peaceful haven from any busy day. The Verger/caretaker is very friendly and helpful if you have questions.

Rather dumbfounded to witness so many overhead screens - is this a multiplex cinema then?
Audio system good, capacious. Not sure about ambience with so much hi- tech equipment. Visibility marked for me on this occasion.

Hi Ruth,
The centre and side aisle screens are raised out of sight when not in use, but increasingly at funerals, families are requesting the use of such equipment to share memories of the deceased. The screen are also used in our Sunday services to display liturgy and hymns as well as enriching sermons. I am please you found the sound system good.

A very friendly and happy church that suits all ages. There is a great social life attached to it and it's so nice to see so many young families attending on Sunday's. Plenty to do for each generation from under 5's to over 60's

Attended a service here last week and the church was packed with many people standing at the back. The church is well maintained and has a very good feel about it.

Maybe the interior is a bit dated but the dynamic and activities readily counterbalance that. Not as cool dude, fresh and in touch as St Andrews but Emmanuel is welcoming , warm spirited, and inclusive. It attracts a broad swathe of folk, encourages their engagement, and serves them very well.

Do you have to be an Anglican and have attended services regularly, in order to show an interest in bell ringing? Perhaps to watch the team in action or at practice? Maybe you have some video online via the Emmanuel website or generally on YouTube?
No you do not have to be an Anglican to be able to ring the bells. There is no bell ringing at the moment due to covid 19 but the normal practice night is Thursdays

No, we don't use them on a regular basis but we have used them in the past for individuals when they have requested them. We are more than willing to renew our supplies if we know they will be used. Every blessing.Tim

The bells are impressive. Are they rung at specific times each week? Is there a regular practice evening? Do the team ring in competitions or a league?
TCLplymouth
Plymouth, UK3 aportes
The bells are rung before the 10.30 and 6.30 Sunday services and on Thursday evenings at 7.30. There is a strong band of ringers, many of a youthful age and newcomers and visitors are always made welcome.

What became of the spire? The architect's drawing that used to be in the main lobby showed the original plan. Has it been abandoned?
TCLplymouth
Plymouth, UK3 aportes
The spire was never built. The cost of building the tower rose to £3500 when foundations had to go down 12 feet to rest in solid rock. A 4 foot high concrete platform was then made on which to build the tower. Another £1500 was needed for the spire but
Due to the additional cost of the tower the congregation, to the annoyance of churchwarden Parker, were not prepared to raise additional funds

Why is or was it called 'Emmanuel'?
TCLplymouth
Plymouth, UK3 aportes
In the 1860's the Revel family gave the land for the church on the condition that it was called Emmanuel because their son went to Emmanuel College Cambridge. The current congregation would have into other way. There is no better name for a church than Emmanuel because it means 'God with us'

Is it 'High' or 'Low'? Are there women clergy? Do you have a mix of services some in modern style and some KJV and the Prayer Book?
TCLplymouth
Plymouth, UK3 aportes
Emmanuel is evangelical. The rector is male but we have had women clergy.Sunday 8.00 traditional communion service. 10.30 common worship.18.30 evening praise. We use NIV rather than KJV. Hope this helps
