A store house of several destroyed Somnath Mandirs.
Unfortunately poorly promoted, very writeups and details of artefacts and badly maintained.

Really sad reflection on trying to conserve this heritage.

The museum is now located where an old Prabhas Patan Temple once stood.

I would say this museum has the actual essence of Somnath - its past glory, relics, artifacts, idols, stone slabs (mentioning its past - in Brahmi, Sanskrit, Pali and Arabic/Persian scripts). Each stone remains, tells a story of its glorious past and existential threat. The stone relics has seen destruction and rebuild of Somnath over 1000 years.
A good collection of Jain idols (some intact, some desecrated) shows there was influence of Jainism in Prabhas Patan

A must visit if anyone is interested in History. Entry fees is nominal Rs.5 per person but for photography one has to shell Rs. 100. This museum is closed on Wednesdays and Public Holidays.

Close to current Somnath Temple but located in a busy alley, so keep a watch to your right if coming from Somnath Temple side.

This museum has protected the parts of earlier Somnath Temples. It is really a great job by the Somnath Trust. The archaeology lovers must visit this place and see the sculptures from old somnath temple.

Though others may not find the museum much attractive but archaeological students/enthusiasts would appreciate and easily can pass few hours in this small museum.

This museum, which is maintained by the ASI, is a hidden gem of Somnath. It is about 15 minutes walk from the Somnath Temple. The museum remains open till 5-30 in the evening and entry fee is nominal. The museum houses the ruins of the various avatars of the Somnath Temple, built by varied rulers and destroyed by another set. The courtyard of the museum is strewn with parts of the temple, all of which are beautifully carved panels. Inside, there are a lot of outstanding statues of Parvati, Ganesha, Surya, Vishnu etc. It is extremely depressing to see so many fragmented ruins of the temple all around. And some of the ruins are such richly sculpted. Along with the ruins of Somnath, there is also the ruins of adjoining Jain temples. One of the rooms in the museum houses the various inscriptions related to the construction of the temple. The ruins and the artifacts in the museum could be better preserved. The rooms seem a bit dingy. Better lighting and ventilation needed inside. Also, the specimens are not properly labelled. Cleanliness is an issue too. However, I would recommned this place to anyone visiting Somnath for taking a peek into the Somnath Temple as it was once upon a time.

A short five minute walk from the Somnath temple, crossing the small market is the Prabhas Patan museum. We had to ask a couple of shops and were guided to this museum.

There is an entrance fee of Rs. 5.

The museum is closed on Wednesdays and open from 10:30 to 17:30 hrs on other days.

As we entered, rows of fragments from pillars and walls of the destroyed temple of Somnath, greeted us. Left open to the elements they were blackened and severely eroded. They were a depressing sight.

But there are two covered buildings, the one to the left, housing the stone slabs with inscriptions collected from around Prabhas Patan, and the one directly in front where the ASI has reconstructed the temple chambers with pillars and domes. The labeling is pretty poor and some of the exhibits seem to have been restored (faces restored but the body damaged).

We spent more than an hour here. And at the end, we were left wondering what would have caused the attackers to damage such beautiful sculptures.

Only regret was there was no guide here. Or a guide book.

But one must not miss this museum.

In a gulley - just walking distance from the temple is this treasure house of a museum. Entrance fee is just Rs 5 and camera fee is Rs 100. My recommendation is to first see this museum before you visit the temple. Rows and rows of temple ruins from the attacks and cruel defacing by the Islamic invaders are labeled and presented very well here with historical data in English also. They are presented in the large courtyard, and in rooms with corridors. It was heart touching to read about all that our ancestors have endured because of their pride in our culture. Today, the Ghazni town (of Mahmud Ghazni who plundered this temple on his 16th invasion) is a dusty derelict of a town, and Somanth, in contrast, has risen in magnificent splendor. That impact can be experienced only if you visit this museum.
