Go first class! There were 1200 people on this train. We didn't have to walk nearly as much as the others. Our train car was set up with booths around tables rather than a traditional train setting. This allowed us to visit with the others on the train and still enjoy the view. It was hot in the car when the sun was shining. Once it clouded over outside, it was fine. Our train attendant was an energetic young lady. After the beer festival, the younger people (late 20s) were rowdy while the rest of us (over 40) were quiet. It's a public train... We were late returning but we didn't need to be anywhere so that was fine. Don't expect this train to keep a schedule. Overall, very pleased.

Long wait to get boarding pass, (wrist band), as they had only 2 employees, checking IDs, getting waivers signed & issuing the wrist bands. Made security at DIA look efficient. Then more waiting for the train. Then, we board the unairconditioned dome
car. Yes, the AC was broken in the first-class dome car. The porter assured us that someone was working on it. The train left 35 minutes late and it took 2 hours to get to the event. The AC was never fixed. We won't get stuck on that railroad again.

Started off poorly. Got there at 8am to get tickets. Easy enough. Then had to stand in line to check in. Took forever and not sure why. When we got up there they crossed it name off, checked IDs and have us a wristband. Took 15 seconds. They ran out of coffee so we walked to a coffee shop and were told to be back no later than 9:30. We were back early and then had to stand in the sun and wait to board until 10:30. All the cars in front of us boarded but the last three cars just stood there. Numerous employees walked past and said we would board soon. Finally someone radioed the manager and said they had no idea we were all still waiting (not true). So instead of leaving at 10 we left closer to 10:45. It was just very uncoordinated. So our car had to share an attendant with 2 other cars. We didn't get any snacks, we were charged for water, and had to go wait in line at the bar car 4 cars up for it. Not impressed.
Then at the festival the train was selling pretzels for $1 which I thought was included on the train. The other cars all got them, but we were told they ran out. And, most laughable, they were selling t-shirts with a sign that said 2 for $10. But if you tried to purchase them they were actually $16 each. Apparently only 1 specific shirt was included in the 2 for $10. How does that even make sense?
Anyway, I felt bad for our attendant. The festival itself was awesome. The people we met were amazing, but we wouldn't do it again.

Awesome festival!!! The staff, from start to finish, were the best. I do have two recommendations:
1) Make a better walk path up to the platform.
2) Provide a list of brewers and the beers they will serve.
In any case my wife and I will keep going back!!!!

This is a very unique beer festival. I’d recommend drinking only water on the way up. We had some Texans who were a little rambunctious after some morning scotch, but everyone was fairly well behaved.
I got screwed on the shirt I purchased though. I ordered a 3x to account for shrinkage. They called and said that I could have a 2x. Didn’t notice until later that they gave me a 1x, which is pretty much useless. Other than passing away $20 for a shirt I can’t wear, it was a great time.

Rails and Ales took us from the Alamosa train station up into the mountains where 43 breweries were waiting to share their tasty beverages. The route through the mountains is beautiful and the gorgeous restored Pullman cars of the Rio Grande railroad were comfortable and charming to ride in for the 2
hour trip to the venue. The staff checking us in and on the train were friendly and helpful. There was an very fun band playing on the stage(the Salties). Everyone there seemed to be having a fantastic time.
Great event!

We had a great time!! The car we were in had a table with four chairs, which was wonderful. Our car attendant was fun and brought us beer and water often!!! The only down side was that we couldn’t board until 10:00 AM and were told to be there by 7:30!! That’s a long time to stand in line!! All in all, lots of fun and great people to hang out with 😊

We had a wonderful time. We went the first week after school was out so it wasn't crowded. The scenery was amazing but we had a wonderful winter so there was still snow on the mountains. Even though there had been a forest fire the year before, as you rode by in the train, the contrast in colors was amazing. We didn't see bears but we did see elk and deer and just enough wildlife to keep the kids interested. The food was very good. The staff was a lot of fun. We just lulled along enjoying ourselves in a very relaxing atmosphere. The stop at LaVeta was fun. We'd been there before. We just walked around the town, had an ice cream, the grandkids played in the park and before we knew it, it was time to go. Everyone should do at least one train ride in Colorado and this one is special.

This was a great way to slowly relax and enjoy the mountain scenery on a modern train from the 20th century.
Our ticket included a brunch, served almost at once. However, the food was not warm/hot as we expected.
The servers and guides were knowledgeable, fun and friendly.
They do serve drinks and other snacks.
This is an all day trip so enjoy!

My family (4 adults) enjoyed this scenic ride to LaVeta and back. The staff were marvelous. We enjoyed riding on an off season Monday which granted us permission to ride in any car. We purchased first class dome car seats but rode most of the trip in the open air car. Brunch I would rate a 4. Service a 10. We'd ride again in the future.

Their website is closed and I found an article from last November in a local paper stating they have filed for bankruptcy. They have a date for the beerfest train on facebook but the link to buy tickets is broken. Are there any locals who can tell us what is going on?

Is the Rails and Ales ride similar to the wine tasting ride with sample tastings included in the ticket price? Or are the beer selections only avaliable for purchase?

Hi-The Rails and Ales ticket price included drinking as many beer samples as you want while you are at the venue. The breweries really didn’t want to be carrying any beer back down the mountain, so they were very generous :) This year 43 breweries participated and most of them had 2-3 beers to try. The live music was great, the train is really cool, just a great day of fun and beer.

Did much of the forest that the train runs through get consumed by the fire? We are just wondering if we should come at a different time vs seeing Peter Yarrow. I don’t want to drive a long way to see charred hills! Please advise.

Yes. Much of this area was totally devastated by the fires. So tragic
