Beautiful day to explore Royal Gorge for cross-country skiing. Views are amazing! Limited crowds. Trails were nicely groomed. Prices were reasonable. Staff were pleasant and friendly. One star deduction as the facility was not offering any lessons that day, which was disappointing. Otherwise, if you are well-versed in cross-country skiing, this place is lovely!

Rental equipment was great. Staff was friendly, fast, and knowledgeable. The trails were numerous and nicely groomed, and the surrounding scenery is breathtaking.

I had never done tracked XC skiing on narrower skis (use 88mm in National Parks usually). We had so much fun! Nice people - guests and employees - beautiful trails, good trail markings.

Since I've never X-C skied before, I have no frame of reference on which to critique this facility.

The parking lot was a little small....and I don't know if there was additional parking elsewhere because the snow was piled so high you couldn't see beyond the parking lot. The lot was also pretty full but we did find a parking spot.

We rented equipment ($30 skis/boots/poles). The resort pass cost $35. Unlike alpine (downhill) resorts, there were few people inside the lodge...guess they were all off skiing already. The rental office is downstairs, but you pay for everything upstairs. Equipment pickup was quick. Nice staff!

My buddy was experienced at X-C skiing and felt I didn't need a lesson... so off we went. I didn't know that xc skis didn't have an edge and down I went...twice in the first 15 seconds! But after a little while, I was beginning to understand the skis. He also took me on the long trek out to Mariah Point and back (appx 8.5 miles r/t). This "black" route meant climbing a dozen or so times...again, with no sharp edge, this was challenging and difficult at times. My GPS track recorded appx 1200 feet worth of climbing throughout the round trip (climbing required in both directions) But the routes and the view point (at the end) were beautiful to behold. Being my first time on xc skis and on black routes, it was an extremely physical demand...I was a pool of sweat head to toe by the time we got back to the lodge (3:30 r/t). My camelback was essential! I've run marathons...the level of exhaustion at the end was very similar. But I think most of that tiredness came from working out hard at 7000 ft. I love a good workout and definitely want to do this again!

We x-c ski here often, have for years. Management and staff friendliness has improved significantly since Sugar Bowl took over. If snow elsewhere is marginal this place always gets the most, and they groom it as fast as they can. This particular visit the snow was exceptional, cold and fluffy (no tree drip!), and the trail conditions were great.

When the snow is good and you're in good shape, there are the most amazing places you can skis at Royal Gorge. There are also excellent trails for beginners and mid-range skiers, but if you want a long, challenging day of skiing, this is the place to go. It is the highlight of my yearly ski vacation to the Lake Tahoe area and spending five hours on skis isn't hard to do here.

They have small and large tubes for young kids to young adults. Areas are properly staffed to protect the safety of participants. Food concession stands are less organized. Lodge is too small. The elevation of the slopes and the number of lifts indication of a smaller than average snow park. We were here for the grand kids. So it works out well for us. It is less than 20 minutes drive from truckees. Make sure you stop by the vista area along the way. The view is spectacular.

We were here in late September- so no skiing. But - we did drive in on the roller coaster maintenance road and parked near the warm up hut. From there a really nice - easy hike in to Long Lake.
Very pretty area with rope swings to use if you are brave enough to plunge into the cool lake.

Just came back from a weekend of skiing and snowshoeing at Royal Gorge, our last trip for this skiing season and another fantastic experience!

Unlike the long lines at the equipment rental in most ski resorts, the equipment rental at Royal Gorge is super quick. But what’s really amazing is that everyone is super friendly and helpful.

The trails are well marked, so even though I have no sense of direction I had no problem navigating my way around miles and miles of gorgeous trails. This trip I finally made it all the way up to Lyle’s Lookout, which was truly spectacular.

I highly recommend Royal Gorge for fun snow adventure. Don’t fear the cold; once you start moving you warm up fairly quickly.

Thank you Royal Gorge Ski Resort for making our every trip a success! We’ll be back….

While it is a cross-country resort, I visited to go snowshoeing. The resort has a huge network of trails, so there is something for everyone to choose from, weather permitting. I stuck to the easier trails with my snowshoes and had a great time. Even though it was a Sunday, I never felt there were too many people around, and many times I could not see another person, so it was really a tranquil experience. The forest and mountain vistas are truly beautiful. The lodge has been around for years and is showing it's age a bit. But everything is functional, the rentals are quality gear, and the staff is very helpful and friendly. Free WiFi is also available.
