In place of the gift shop is a new museum. Wonderfully curated and very interesting the exhibits feature grant participants and part of the extensive Spertus collection.

I went for a tour with a group of architects, and was impressed that the interior carried the themes from the facade throughout the building. Well done, Krueck + Sexton!
I will come back for a proper event soon.

When Spertus built this museum, the architectural critics raved about the building. It is an amazing glass building with very unusual geometric designs. I guess they ran out of money when it came to curating the museum. In their prior building, they displayed much more in a smaller space. Their first effort at curating exhibits was to follow the "trend"of garage or warehousing their exhibits in long glass exhibit booths with exhibits hanging helter-skelter style , without much explanation of what they were or their provenance. It's time they spent more time trying to be a real museum for the peopleand not trying to be so avant-garde that the museum goers do not understand what they are seeing.

I attended a performance of the Chicago Jazz Orchestra in a tribute to Charles Mingus in the theater at the Institute. The upstairs theater was intimate, modern and clean. The bathrooms were also cleaner than local businesses and museums nearby. The upstairs windows give a lovely night view of the park. The architecture feels unique and protective of the inner layers of the building. This event did not offer concessions, but the lobby does have a permanent service area. As we walked around outside the theater, I enjoyed the exhibits. The curatorial staff, in fact all of their staff, appear to do a great job. I will go back for programs or events in this nice space.

The 2nd and 7th floors were bare of exhibits when we visited this week. The incredibly lovely Miriam Shabbat artefacts made up for that.
Modern takes on ancient symbolism are breathtakingly beautiful.
The shop is closed on Tuesdays which was a disappointment but likely saved us a packet as reproductions of the exhibit are on sale.
Always top of our list when we visit Chicago.

The Spertus Institute stands out on Michigan Avenue literally with a glass façade that looks like an origami experiment. They have a small art collection, just go to the gift shop and they will give you a description and location of the art throughout the building. Most of it is on the first floor, but there are small pieces on upper floors you can access with the super-fast elevators. What is really nice about Spertus is that it is a very quiet, contemplative place in the middle of busy Chicago. While the street outside is hectic, you can take a few minutes to sit and enjoy the art and gather your thoughts in the wonderful building. If you don’t want to explore the building, most of the art is on the first floor right at the entrance. There is a very large gift shop with a wide selection of items there too. It’s more of an adult place, children will be easily bored.
Check their hours, they are usually closed early on Friday and all day on Saturday for Sabbath.
The museum of Contemporary Photography is nearby and offers interesting exhibits and is also free.
It's downtown Chicago so forget about parking, take mass transit. Lots of buses stop right at the building.

The location is ideal for taking some time to visit. it need not be a long visit. The gift shop has many items. There was not a lot to see but it was still a moving, worthwhile experience. The building is designed with a window wall built from 726 individual pieces of glass in 556 different shapes. It is meant to reflect by its transparency the accessible and public nature of Spertus.

The Spertus Institute isn't much of a museum; it's a school, library, and cultural center. We checked in and were sent to the bookstore which provided us with directions through the building. On the first floor there is a small exhibit about how the Chicago Jewish community helped with the founding of Israel. On the second floor there are computers with some interesting film clips about local Jewish history. On the seventh floor there was a small exhibit of woodcuts. Although it was during posted hours, the library on the eighth floor was closed. It's a good quick stop, but don't expect a significant museum of Jewish history and culture. The best part is the truly excellent Judaica gift shop.

Whether you visit the Spertus center because you are interested in the Jewish history of Chicago, or you are interested in architecture, this is a must-see in Chicago. Fabulously located on Michigan Avenue, the building has won numerous architecture awards (http://www.spertus.edu/about/architecture). It is a pleasure to look around, and has rotating exhibits on Jews in Chicago.

There are tons of rotating exhibits in the school with a self-guided tour that you really should go to if you have some time. The gift shop is very pretty and has a ton of beautiful pieces for Jewish family life that cannot be found elsewhere. The pieces are expensive but quality is well worth the price. Easy to get to on the #3 bus from the Magnificent Mile, or a short walk from Millennium Park.
