Even though we were in the middle of mother nature we were hardly bit by mosquitos. Yes, there are a lot of bugs, I mean just look at where we are.
The sites were nice in size and even the people there were all nice.
I really enjoyed my weekend.
My only complaint was the hot water from the camp bathrooms.
Having to shower and wash your hands with hot water on a 90 degree day sucked but you can't have it all and for the amount of money we paid, we can't complain.
I would definitely come back again!

Tried horseback riding today. I'm in bed now with a sore shoulder and spine from falling off. 5 in our party were tossed. Nothing seemed to trigger the horses. My daughter's horse took off and she fell at a good speed.
I do NOT recommend this experience. The risk isn't worth it.
Never again.
You may have your opinion of horses, I now have mine. NO THANKS!

If you need to get away, it could be an option. It is less than 2 hour drive from the City of Chicago and camping site is open to public. Boat rental and fishing at the lake are available for activity. if you like to hike, you can enjoy the nature of state park. Just be aware that Racoon can attack your food at camp site if you leave it outside of your tent.

Tuesday morning, July 22nd, we called the Stables at Chain "O Lakes State Park
and left a message inquiring about taking our grandkids (15 12, 14 and 11) horseback riding that day. Becky got back to us early afternoon and set us for a 2:30 time. We arrived in time and she was just coming back from leading others on a trail ride. We appreciated that she had gotten back to us and agreed to our same day request despite the fact that she had to man the phones, lead trail rides and take care of the horses with the help of just one other person. Our grandkids were very novice riders and she was just great with them, giving them tips on how to ride and information about each horses' personality and preferences. It was a wonderful experience for us all and the trails through woods and meadows were beautiful. We waited probably a half hour or more for our turn, but were fine with this so as to give the horses time to drink and rest up a bit. Becky and the man who was helping her (on his day off, in fact) were friendly and welcoming to us and very patient with our grands.

There is nothing good about camping here. It's not pretty, the bugs are awful. The rangers are so bothersome, you can't do anything. Couldn't have 3 cars on a site, not sure why, especially in this day and age, anyone would care about something so trivial. Just very nitpicky. There are definitely way better places to camp that are not far from Illinois. Don't waste your time.

This not very-well-known state park would surprise most first-timers. The lakes are the highlight and the absolutely beautiful channels that connect them. Definitely for kayakers and canoers. You can rent them there (includes life jackets). It also has a beach and plenty of trails. Gigantic campground although a lot of sights are a little short for camper trailers. Restroom maintenance is a problem at all the state parks I have visited, though not a disaster. Did not hear any loud music at night. Camped for 3 nights with a 30 footer.. Albion, the county seat is close by with restaurants. Shipshewana is about an hour away.

Literally in my tent writing this review. I will never visit this park again. Each night at around 9pm music starts blasting and runs well past midnight. I complained, and it turns out there's a club or bar in the area that blasts music outdoors at night. Due to lack of sleep, you'll be very tired throughout your trip and your camping experience will be ruined. I'll be sticking with Rock Cut State Park moving forward.

A Great State Park close to home...but makes you feel like you're away from everywhere. We have camped here many times. Nice campgrounds.. we prefer sights 16 and 45 for electric sights at Mudd Lake and also prairie view campground for tenting without electric. Shower house and bathrooms very clean. Good place to fish ...boat... relax.

I’ve never once had a problem with Rangers like others have claimed. My wife and I started camping here when we were maybe 29/30 years old and that was about 4-5 years ago. We frequent the park. This is our fourth time here this year alone and we will be back in the beginning of July to camp with our family. So the never having problems with rangers isn’t anything new. As a matter of fact; I’ve had the exact opposite experience, the rangers have ALWAYS been very friendly and accommodating.
My wife and I stargaze. We went down to the boat launch area while camping for the first time years back, all whilst not knowing if we should or not and both rangers and conservation police checked in and both were extremely polite and loved the fact that we were doing what we were doing down there. Perhaps it’s an added perk of the hobby, but when someone sees a massive telescope it’s probably more or less like a highway patrolman views a 2003 sable versus a 2019 hellcat demon challenger.
Folks, if you respect park rules you’re going to be fine. Loud, rowdy and obnoxious and looking to slam down some cold ones? You deserve to be kicked out IMO. These guys are just doing their jobs and a lot of it including the alcohol happens to be state law in all Illinois parks, not just this one.
Here’s where the park loses a star, and sadly it’s due to the people that visit it and the people around it... Noise and upkeep. Blarneys island is open and too loud until 1am. Even one of those “dreaded” rangers spoke with me and said what a shame it was and how difficult his job to enforce quiet hours is when you have Guns N’ Roses CRANKING at 12:45am.
The other thing is the bathrooms. Outhouses could use some refreshing and upkeep. Even the shower houses can get disgusting due to some people that seem to really need to be in a hospital and not a campground. This past trip there was crap smeared all over the toilet seat and blood spatter on the floors. It seriously looked like a crime had been committed.
So next time you trash a park both figuratively in writing or literally, think long and hard about why YOUR experience was crappy If you’re contributing to the problem. :).

I was hiking the park with some friends (all senior citizens). We were walking on the road, because there was no path at that point. We were walking against traffic, as per state regulations, and a truck approached us. We walked to the side of the road, to allow room for the truck to pass, but stayed on the blacktop. The truck stopped and the driver told us that park policy was that pedestrians had to share the road with cars. There was no on-coming traffic. I asked if he couldn't drive over the yellow line to go around us. He restated that we had to share the road with cars. I asked if he worked for the park, and he said he was a ranger, although he wore no uniform. So we got off the road, into the mud, and he drove past. "Sharing the road" for cars and cyclists means cars must allow 3 feet to pass a cyclist. But, apparently, in this park, "sharing the road" means that pedestrians are not allowed on the road if a car approaches.

I would love to know more about the hiking trails, such as length, facilities, etc.

According to the posted trail guides, the park contains approximately 6 miles of hiking and biking trails. That being said, the signs at the trail-heads are pretty worn out and in need of repair, so pick up a trail guide at the park entrance. The trails are very well marked, and several wide, well maintained trails make up the parks trail system.
Some of the best prairie hiking in the area. Lots of marshland views along the Badger and Gold Finch Trails, while the other trails have great forested routes. Great bird watching, if your looking for that.
Most of the trails pass through hidden picnic areas, so there is most often water available, along with camp type restroom facilities. BONUS: No admission fee is charged to get into the park, however campsite fees are charged for overnighters.

Does the stable take credit cards or is it cash only?

If I recall correctly, you can use credit card, but I recommend to call and check with them.
