We visited Perryville Battlefield on Saturday August 5. It was a sunny, hot, humid day. This was my 1st time visiting Perryville, but I was already knowledgeable about the battlefield. Had donated twice in previous years to the American Battlefield Trust in campaigns to help preserve battlefield land at Perryville. It is one of the most completely preserved Civil War battlefields in the US. It is also very well interpreted and the land extremely well maintained. This site could easily be considered for a National Park Service Civil War Battlefield Unit because it is so well maintained. The nearby town of Perryville is also very pleasant to visit.

The museum at Perryville is small, but very informative. The staff there were friendly and very helpful. The museum has a number of artifacts from both sides that the visitor can see. There is also a film that visitors can watch in the museum that gives the background of the Civil War in Kentucky and the run up to the Battle of Perryville, which was fought on October 8, 1862. It was fought exactly 3 weeks after the Battle of Antietam, so Perryville often does not get the attention it deserves. This battle kept the border state of Kentucky in the Union for the remainder of the Civil War.

We then drove around the battlefield and stopped at most of the interpretive road signs. Would have liked to hike to the ones off the road a bit, but it was very hot. The staff had mowed a small, but clear path to get to those off road signs if people wanted to walk the terrain to get there. The land and hillsides were a beautiful green and covered in wildflowers. There are a few Civil War memorials on the battlefield, including one that was put up by Minnesota Artillery Unit back in 2022.

While at one of the interpretive signs, I had the opportunity to speak with a fellow traveler who was from Kentucky and also visiting the park, again. He'd been to the battlefield multiple times. He recommended coming to Perryville during the anniversary weekend around the battle to see the reenactment of the battle of Perryville. To my understanding the battle of Perryville is reenacted in the state park on the sites where it was actually fought. After seeing the park, the museum and the topography I intend to do this in the next few years with a couple of friends who are also Civil War buffs.

Highly recommend visiting this beautiful state park that is steeped in so much history.

My great uncle was in the Battle of Perryville and I was able to see the exact location where they fought. Although his unit (75th Illinois Infantry Regiment) didn't get into the battle until late in the afternoon, they still sustained 225 casualties (out of 700), so he was very fortunate. He survived the war, returned to Dixon, Illinois, married and his wife died in 1868. In 1872 he was visiting friends in Pennsylvania and was struck by lightning and killed - a very sad story. The staff at the Perryville Battlefield were so helpful and I appreciated seeing the artifacts in the small but very excellent museum. It is well worth a visit!

Everything about this site is well done. The museum is tiny and mighty with a short (28 or 29-minute) film that guts you and leaves you in tears. The people at the giftshop are welcoming, informative, helpful, and obviously dedicated stewards of the site. We visited when the temps were in the 90s and humidity was high (always in Kentucky) so opted to drive. We stopped at every pull-in and read every sign. Thanks to the film we could clearly follow the signs, looking over the hills, up the ridges, into the valleys. You could hear the screams of the artillery and men and smell the smoke and blood. The wildflowers were in bloom and the trails were clear. We had no idea what this battle meant in the scheme of things before we came here, and how close we came to being in such a different place as a country. The signs have the words of those who were there. From the "piles" of dead and dying left for the few townspeople to bury and try to heal to the economic devastation they experienced from the battle (homes, crops, land destroyed) and the psychological impact it had on those there, it's something you don't shake off when you drive away. This makes it sound like a horrible place to visit. It's not. It's a necessary one.

Off the beaten path, but well worth the drive. Back in the rolling hills near a small town. Small but very good visitors center. Was surprised it wasn't a national park. Very well kept and clean. Will go there again if we are in the area.

I was in Richmond, KY, headed to Cincinnati, and decided to detour to see the Perryville Battlefield State Historic Site. The museum admission is $5. It had a good video and good exhibits. After that, I walked the trail (just a mown path between historical markers) along markers 1-11, which gave a great sense of the battlefield terrain. Overall, I enjoyed my time!

We did not go to the museum which has a fee. We took the car trail, it was very hot the day we were their. It is rather sobering to visit because you know the death that occurred at the sight. It is rather large. A good stop if you like history,

Awesome park! Great collection of Civil War items. Staff is so friendly and knowledgeable. I could easily spend the day but as my wife is not into the Civil War we compromised. If you like history then you need to make a visit. The park isn't so large so you can cover the ground in a short amount of time. It should be a National Park.

Making my way south down to Nashville to visit some Civil War sites I missed on my last trip and I had to stop at Perryville! I’ve never been before and I was absolutely stunned at the condition of the site and the wonderful docents that helped make this story come alive. Thanks to all of you for your hard work!

This is my happy place when I want to go for a drive/day trip. Although I go to the re-enactments it’s nice just to spend a quiet day stopping at each marker and imagining the battle that took place so many years. The beauty of it is that this is one of the most pristine battle sites in the nation believe it or not. Stop in the museum/gift shop if you haven’t already been and chat with the friendly staff. If you are a Kentucky resident you can join The Friends of Perryville and receive free entrance to the museum. They also offer a walking tour of the battlefield if interested.

It was the 160th anniversary of the Battle of Perryville. After Covid restrictions curtailed activities for a couple of years there were over 1,300 re-enactors present. There was a large crowd, a number of speakers and re-enactors interacting with the folks who came. There was also a walking tour of the battlefield given by a young docent/re-enactor that was the highlight of the day. His knowledge of the battlefield and its history is remarkable. Did I mention this battlefield is the most pristine and well preserved in the country? Well, it is.
