I didn't properly research this rail trail. I thought it was longer and would be more of a workout. The section in the center where you have to bike on the street is frightening (just bike on the sidewalk), some sections are well maintained and other sections could use a good paving. We enjoy the Minuteman and Bruce Freeman trails, but will probably not seek this one out again. Everyone we met along the trail was very friendly.

I've walked the trail from the Russell St/Main St end up to Cy Tenney Park. The first stretch goes a good distance along the Ipswich River. If you look to the left, forested river views. If you look to the right, Russell St backyards and high-power lines; look to the left. *TIP; towards the end of this section, as it approaches Russell St again, do climb the hill for a (safe) peek into the Aggregate Industries quarry; quite a sight! The next section of the trail you could call a connector; there's really nothing to see until you reach Crystal Lake. With the new upgrades, this is a very attractive place to walk. But past there it is still a great walk, through the marshland with ducks, geese, red-winged blackbirds, turtles, and more. This stretch ends at Cy Tenney/Ross park which is a treat for my grandson as he practices his gymnastics on the various playground pieces.
The entire trail is paved. That's a plus but wear your best walking shoes because it is hard on the feet.
This is a wonderful asset for West Peabody. Now if they could only do something similar around the Winona Pond Reservoir.

The upgrades and cleanup of the east pond at Lowell St. is coming along, and looks like it should be nice when done. The trial overall is nice this time of year, as the leaves start to change. Almost everyone is nice, including their dogs: the rare exception is people in large groups who "hog the road".The section that starts in Middleton and goes to Russell St..iis quite long, but has a lot of different views. The section between Russell St. and Lowell St. (behind the shopping center) is really the only uninteresting one, although the marshlands have a lot of red-wing blackbirds. The Section from Lowell St. to Cy Tenney Park has the multiple ponds, so you can see frogs, snakes, turtles, chipmunks etc. as well as various birds, including the resident swans.
The section from near the high school to behind the Lahey is also quite nice (At one point LowellSt. must be crossed, there is a walk signal). Not so much wildlife at the end, but very popular section behind the hospital, etc. for people on their lunch break.
Some pictures attached, including the in-process upgrades,

This is such a great path that starts out at the park where the kids can play before being pulled down on a wagon, stroller, or even bike! I take my children who are 4&7 here to learn how to skate and also on there bikes. It’s a very safe trail where they can be again if your begins with a younger one but still in eyes reaches and not have to worry for cars. You can in a great workout or stroll on this path free of distractions from the main road. Highly recommend this bike/ walking trail.

Though it is a bike path, I used to walk along this trail and it always gives some sort of peaceful in mind. There are couple of ponds along the trail and spotted wildlife few times.

This rail-to-trail path is a good place for a short hike or bike ride away from some of the busier streets nearby. A short walk from the main trail is a large natural area that can be accessed. Look for the historic grave sites in the forest. It does end abruptly as was noted. A short stretch on the road beyond the west end allows access to the bike trail that goes to Topsfield.

Lovely, easy bike or walk trail. Wetlands, Ipswich River as you approach the trail's western end. A very few roads to cross, and some drivers do not watch the signals, so be careful there.

This bike route is my favorite. Never overcrowded. Nice balance of shade/sun. Lots of wildlife if you keep your eyes pealed. You can walk, run, bike, or roller-blade. On every journey I take on this path, you always receive a nod from the other runners/bikers in passing. No one knows if you have been out there 5 minutes or 5 miles. The universal nod of acknowledgement that you got off your booty to burn some calories keeps the Adrenalin flowing;)

How long is the bike trail?

I would never vouch for the safety of something when, these days, anything can happen. However, I would suggest trying the stretch from Crystal Lake down to Ross Park. We were there on Monday, admittedly a holiday, but the trail was well-traveled, without being crowded, by families, dog-walkers and bikes. It's a pleasant walk of about a mile that passes through a marsh well-populated by ducks, geese and swans. It's easier to park at the Ross Park end and walk towards Crystal; no crossing busy Lowell St. The renovation of Crystal Lake makes it very attractive and will attract more and more people.

Coming from Ridersville, Va where is the best location to get on the bike path for about a 15-20 mile ride?

The Independence Greenway is only 4-5 miles long. For a much longer ride I would suggest the Danvers Rail Trail. I don't know how many miles, but it's much longer than the Independence Greenway. The Danvers Rail Trail starts on Lowell Street in Peabody next to the Speedway gas station at the Route 1 on-ramp.
