This was my first trip to Great Falls, where my parents (now deceased WWII vets) lived in the 1940s-50s. I was thrilled to visit St. Ann's Cathedral, where my parents were married in 1944. The pastor and administrator could not have been more gracious talking with my husband and me about my family roots in Great Falls. The cathedral is beautiful (well preserved and spotless!) and we were especially impressed with the gorgeous carved wooden doors. The doors are in memory of a prominent local physician, Dr. John McGregor (donated by his family). Turns out (I learned later from my sister after sending her my photos of the cathedral) Dr. McGregor was the physician who delivered my sister at Columbus Hospital in 1953! My parents and sister moved from Montana to the East Coast in 1954, so needless to say, this was an exciting find for our family. Serendipity at its best! So glad I made the trip to St. Anne's!

My wife and I have gone to the Cathedral regular Sunday Mass. It is small as cathedrals go but is very nicely done and a friendly congregation.

I was an out of state visitor and when I found it, the whole area was dark, no clear entry marked, and although the darkness was due to the Easter Vigil, almost could not get in. And even bumped into glass doors.gotta remember some people may be new.beautful place!

Montana has some beautiful churches built by money from mining. St Ann is the largest. Built in the early 20th century, it cost $100,000.

The Cathedral Church for Great Falls is in an older though very nice neighborhood. I believe the original architect modeled the building after 14th century English churches, and he was quite successful in emulating these. The cruciform layout is definite, without being overwhelming. The interior is not highly decorated but in a very tasteful plain style. You will not find evidence that the Church was built before Vatican II except in the absolutely beautiful stained glass windows.
The pastor is a talented musician. After confessions on Saturday he played the piano offering a medley of familiar traditional and contemporary music. He wrote the music for the common parts of the Mass and has a lovely Irish baritone voice. Mass on Sunday was well attended, though there was still some room.
Both for devotional and historical purposes I would recommend a visit to this Cathedral. But careful: I wanted to drop in for a visit on Saturday morning and found every door locked.

hard to say anything bad about this beautiful building - not as ornate as others, but what is there is definitely worth the stop... daily mass is at noon and is timed just right for tourists et'al.

Lovely parish church. The Pastor is very friendly and his homily spoke to real life issues. Very relatable. Nice Mass.

The church reminds you of a church in Europe. It is beautiful and a wonderful place to worship. Father Oliver is from Ireland and he brings a high level of professionalism to his sermon. He has a sense of humor which he shares and a sermon that is easy to follow.

Great Falls was a robust frontier town of 3,900 souls in 1889, just six years after its founding, when three Catholic businessmen went in on a $3,000 loan to build the modest Chapel of St. Ann on the town's lower north side.
It took just 17 years for the small chapel, named after the mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary, to be deemed inadequate for the town's growing Catholic population. So, in April, 1906, the cornerstone was laid for the stunning English Gothic cathedral you see today standing just yards from the former site of chapel.
Built of hewn-sandstone hauled to Great Falls from quarries near Stockett (about 15 miles to the east), it cost $60,000 when built and featured beautiful old-world craftsmanship in its stonework as well as the stained-glass windows which contain some of the finest glasswork in the U.S.
The entire structure was designed and built, both internally and externally, in thirteenth century Gothic Revival style and it is now among the oldest true cathedrals in the Northwest.
In 2003 a $2.1 million major restoration was undertaken with the goal of restoring the church to its neo-gothic splendor, including uncovering three large stained-glass windows above the altar which had been concealed during a remodeling project during the 1950's.
Altogether, there are now 21 restored and repaired stained-glass windows, first designed and installed by Mundt Studios of Chicago, within the cathedral.
One hundred and eight years later, this gorgeous cathedral, called the finest stone building in Montana, remains a vital part of the history of this city as well as a stunning downtown landmark.
