My husband I visited the Cobh Heritage Centre while in a guided group tour through Ireland. My husband has Irish ancestors, but there were a lot of gaps in his family’s history due to inaccurate records and birthdates. The genealogists at Cobh were very helpful - they patiently sat and explained all the different ways we could find more records and miraculously they were able to locate his ancestors records, including marriage dates, a photo of the grave, and even a corrected date of birth and census records. We discovered that his ancestors were not from Co. Cork as his family had thought - but rather from Co. Carlow and Co. Wexford - and that a lot of Irish immigrants to the U.S. left from Co. Cork and wrote that on their immigration paperwork when arriving into America. It was enlightening and exciting to trace back his heritage- and we really couldn’t have done it without their help. A big thank you to Christie who spent so much time patiently helping us, and explaining everything- we really found out more than we could have dreamed.

This is a well thought out display. It takes you along in chronological order with good quality displays. It starts with the 1600’s and the political prisoners and “involuntary” indentured servants sent to the United States and progresses to modern day. As history has told, there are a lot of sad stories. As a way to keep your interest, you’re given a boarding pass with a name, to check out their journey. We spent much longer here than we expected

The Heritage Centre is marvelous, yet sobering and thought provoking, telling the story of the millions of people who left Ireland through the port of Cobh from the 17th century onwards. Cobh is the last port of call of the Titanic on its fateful voyage in 1912 and in 1915 the ocean liner Lusitania was torpedoed by a German submarine nearby. The survivors were brought to Cobh and most of the bodies of people recovered are buried in Cobh. On entry, each person is given a ticket with the name of an emigrant and thechallenge is to find their story somewhere in the museum. I was assigned Edward Colley a 37 year old engineer who had the misfortune to sail on the Titanic, and who unfortunately, was not one of the survivors.

This is a MUST if you are visiting Cobh. Chronicles Emigration from this port from the 1600's for all its various reasons and is a most comprehensive exhibition. I imagine one could spend a couple of hours before repairing to their coffee shop to digest all...mind you with a 9year old in tow we had a "whistle-stop tour" as she endeavoured to answer all the Quiz Questions on the A4 sheets provided by lady at ticket desk, so she was "engaged" but not for young children I dont think. Its a marvellously laid out and informative exhibition and next time I'm in the area, I shall visit again, in adult-only company!!

My 9 year old girl was refused entry to the toilets by a very rude toilet attendant in her sixtys. It was two minutes to closing time, however, she managed to leave in a gentleman who she said " did the tour"............ Sent an email the following day for attention of manager......No Reply🤬. Dreadful behaviour.

This artifact-rich immersion experience transports you to the travails and challenges that shaped and altered the lives of the legions who embarked from Cobh on their journey to the New World. The museum easily handles large numbers of visitors and allows you to set your own pace and explore the storylines at your own pace. Although a separate nearby museum treats the Titanic story it is given ample attention here in several dedicated galleries.

This place was so informative! I loved the displays and interactive aspects of this self-guided experience. Upon entering, we each received a passenger ticket with a real person's name from history and which ship they were booked on. As we explored the museum, learning about fearsome female pirates, indentured servants, fateful ship voyages and penal colonies in far-flung lands, we kept an eye out for our person's name and history. I'm happy to report that my lady survived the sinking of The Lusitania. Unluckily my husband's person wasn't so fortunate. The exhibits were well planned and immersive. The Queenstown Story really brought history alive in a fascinating and easily followed way.

Did both this and Titanic Experience Cobh on same day. This was much more detailed about the history of Irish emigration, and the evolution of cruise ships. Both huge influences on Cobh. Some AV exhibits but mostly photos & text. Thus probably not the most exciting for kidS who don’t read yet.

You can enter anytime once it's open & take the self guided tour which is great, as you can do the tour at your own pace & spend a little longer if you'd like to look into a bit more detail, so no rush. Handy little coffee & snack bar in the building afterwards & nice helpful staff.
