Kayak after the Withe Pass train

This was well worth the time. We were very fortunate to have excellent sunny weather. I have a couple of tips: This is not a "safari". It is an hour boat ride to a beaching area where you will board two old buses that take you (10 min) to a base camp. The guides are well versed in the area and you will need to be at the front of the bus to hear them. There you will exchange your shoes/boots for knee high rubber boots. Wear thick insulated socks! The only thing between your feet and the cold water/mud is the thickness of the rubber boot. You will walk through the rain forest to a put in point where you will row a canoe to another take out point. Not difficult. The wearing of the bulky life jacket will make it very cumbersome to bring along a back pack. Water is standing in the bottom of the canoes so be careful with where you place carry-ons. The guides were very personable and informative. Beautiful unspoiled nature at it's best. The views were spectacular.
Bottom line is that I would do it again.

The tour guides were amazing and so kind! They were a highlight of this tour and had wonderful personalities!
My husband and I had one day in Skagway and wanted to see wildlife if possible and go hiking. The tour description and title was very misleading. It should have been titled canoe and glacier rather than wilderness safari. There was no safari aspect the speedboat did not stop for wildlife and was over an hour long each way. We took a bus and then two canoes to get to a beautiful glacier but were not able to get close to it. This tour was spent mostly commuting and lacked safari and wildlife scenery. We felt that we wasted this day and wished we could have seen more of Skagway and glacier bay than Alaska the 6 hours we spent on this tour- 5 1/2 hours just commuting.

This was the highlight of our Alaska cruise. We lucked out and had small group of 6 tourists. The boat trip, canoe trip and glacier experience was unparalleled. We were blessed with good weather and our guides were fun and knowledgeable! I was especially impressed by the young women who live out in the “middle of nowhere” with very limited resources who are so delightful and happy to share their experience with us.

Whoever thought of the business model to employ a bunch of young, responsible people in the summer season while they’re off from school or just trying to find themselves, was a genius. Especially whomever runs this company. All staff were very well educated and trained while having a comradely that rivals that of military personnel. And they made the trip incredibly fun and interactive!

We participated on the morning of July 30th. Our boat captain and tour guide were hilarious while they made sure we didn’t miss a thing, from slowing down and turning around to look at whales to brining us right up to a waterfall, all the while educating us on the history of the area.

Our bus ride was fun and the camping was much easier than it sounds. Cooper was our canoe guide and he really helped make the trip magical. All staff were personable and the food at the end was adequate too.

I definitely recommend this trip to anyone!

This was a great excursion. The group explained everything. We loaded up in a canoe and off to the glacier we went. A small hike to the glacier, got some great photos and back to the starting point for a nice little lunch. The group that took care of us done an awesome job. I highly recommend and assure you a great time!

This was our favorite excursion of our entire Alaskan cruise! It is long but well worth it. It starts out with an hour boat ride to an island. Sarah was our naturalist on the boat and she had a lot of information to share with us about the local area. On the boat ride, we saw multiple bald eagles, dolphins and some waterfalls up close.

Once we got to the island we took a bus to get our rain boots/life jackets and canoe. On the canoe we paddled up the river to the glacier. It was a short walk once we got to the beach and the glacier is beautiful. Lexi, Mia and Roxy were our guides on the island and were so much fun. If you have the time, take this excursion!

I'm really glad I didn't read the negative reviews prior to the excursion. We took this as an excursion on a cruise and it was fantastic! My husband booked it so I was unsure of the extent of the "safari". We love the outdoors, camping, hiking, etc. We boarded a boat with about 18 other passengers. The First Mate did a great job of talking about points of interest along the 1 hour trip. The Captain even cruised up to a spectacular waterfall along the coast so we could take close-up picts from the boat (so cool!). After about an hour on the water, we arrived to take a short hike to a bus. The bus took us to a camp that had a shed with rain gear and life vests which we put on. Then we took a short hike to the water where we canoed across a lake to get closer to the glacier. The glacier looks so close but we were still about a mile away. We were able to walk another half mile to get close to the glacier. Seeing the glacier rocks and understanding the magnitude of nature close up was amazing. The team that takes you on the adventure are enthusiastic and love what they do. Most are either studying Forestry or some sort of earth science and are very knowledgeable of the area and the history. I will say that even though you're on a boat for an hour, the hike and canoeing may be more than you expect if you're not in decent shape (I have a bad knee but was still ok). Also, if you're not curious about the area or the "experience" then you could be disappointed because there are lots of things beyond human control especially in Alaska! The lunch was a simple turkey and cheese sandwich that tastes much better after you've worked up an appetite. On the boat ride back, we got to see Stellar Seals that are only there for about 60 days, a few humpback whales, and LOTS of bald eagles (we were playing wildlife bingo!). This was a fantastic excursion!

We had great guides for this trip however I feel our expectations were slightly different from the tour we received. Our main disappointment was the catamaran portion of the trip. We understood this to be the "safari" part of the trip ( maybe this is our error) but the catamaran is just a mode of transport to the area of the Glacier for about 1hour 15 each way. The guide was great and pointed out bald eagles and spoke with us about the area but on the last few minutes of the trip, humpbacks were spotted but the boat did not stop or turn to show us them. The humpbacks were in the bay where the boat dropped us off and we were ushered to the lunch area without a view of the water. We were there to wildlife spot as well as see the glacier so we were really disappointed not to be able to take a minute to whale watch as our whale exposure had been extremely limited whilst we were in Alaska so was excited to see them.

After lunch ( some chips & turkey rolls) we were taken by a really old, uncomfortable school bus over to start a walk down to the river. We paddled down the river before getting out, having a short walk over the bank as the water levels were not high enough to paddle all the way, and into our second boat. We then headed towards the glacier and at that point they used the motor to speed up the journey. We had Zak as our guide and he was excellent, knowledgeable, friendly and enthusiastic. I was so pleased we had him.

I wasn't expecting to get super close to the glacier but i was still surprised by how far back we were. We were even told we were lucky to get as close as we did as apparently they often do not get as far up. The Glacier itself was not as impressive as some of the others we had seen on our trip although still nice to see. The time you get there also depends on how quick you are all able to get there as they need to allow enough time to return. I would say that anyone who struggles with walking any sort of distance or on different terrains may struggle.

The weather took a turn for our return journey so we could not see much at all and the boat was all steamed up and filled with condensation so the limited visibility we did have was non existent. The tour staff passed around a window wiper and were trying their best but the return journey was very long and boring with nothing to see.
Again, the guides were great, overall we had a nice day but I would not recommend the trip to others given the length of time this tour takes and what you get out of it.

I booked this experience through the cruise company we were sailing with, and it was extremely easy to find the start of the tour when we disembarked. We had a 1 hour boat trip over towards the glacier during which we were entertained by the crew, then we landed on shore and we were given lunch of a turkey and cheese sandwich and some crisps.

After lunch we were taken by an old school bus over to start a walk down to the river (after been given a paddle and a life jacket). When we got to the boats we were told how to get in and out safely and introduced to our guide (Nicollette, who was extremely perky, friendly, helpful and interesting) and we paddled down the river before getting out, having a short walk over the bank as the water levels were not high enough to paddle all the way, and into our second boat. We then paddled a little bit towards the glacier before a small engine powered us towards the glacier much more quickly.

At the glacier - which was magnificent - you could walk towards it if you wanted to but couldn't get all the way. Then we did the whole thing in reverse, including the 60 minute boat journey, and just got back to our ship on time (although apparently if you have booked through the cruise company they will hold the boat for you if you are late back).

Overall it was very enjoyable experience, but I think I it was just a bit too long with less opportunity to see wildlife than I would have expected. I think the time of year probably makes a difference as the water levels would have been higher and perhaps we could have done more paddling which was quite fun. I should have probably taken more time to look at what the experience would be before I booked.
