We've had the good opportunity to do several cooking classes on our travel adventures and this was the more authentic and interactive. To clarify, Frances is the first to say this is specifically a "workshop" which perfectly describes our experience. We felt we were welcomed into her home and met several family members, including Milton who assisted with manning the grill and wood burning oven. We are grateful for the lessons learned through the day, Fran's ability to make certain ingredients less intimidating (octopus!), and recipes to take home. I would high recommend this experience (workshop!) for those who like to cook and learn.

We had a great day at New Forest.

Lovely location and great set up. Fran puts a lot of time and effort in creating a great day’s experience. We have been on courses before and found it difficult to recreate due to local markets etc but I feel confident that I will be able to do magic in the kitchen at home.
We made 6 dishes including fresh cheese and bread. It tasted all great and took away lots of top tips.
The location is a little off the beaten track but with great views and beautiful kitchen garden to wonder around makes all the difference that some sterile kitchen and helps you soak up the ambiance.

Would definitely recommend to anyone who wants a go.

Trying to book a cooking class for late September I got in contact with Ossie. First I was a bit shocked by the price but I did understand the price since I was the only person for that date. We agreed that Ossie would inform we whenever there would be more people to join which would decrease to price.

A couple of days later Ossie informed me nicely that 2 other people signed up and if I would join. He also did ask a price that was higher than the price on their own website.

Within an hour I did reply to him saying that if the price mentioned on the website is correct that I would be happy to join.

Without getting any response I did receive a message 2 days later "Sorry we are fully booked for that day now".

What kinda treatment is that? Is this how you taking care of someone who you are in contact with and already agreed for signing up before??

Ridiculous!

Sorry if you feel that way. You did not agree with the price quoted and did not book so when someone else wanted to make a reservation I accepted them. The for 2019 prices are as on our website, when booking for 1 person 120€, when booking for 2 people 95 per person, when booking for 3 people 90€ per person, when booking for 4 people 85€ per person, larger groups quote by email.

If you enjoy both cooking and exploring the wonderful countryside of Portugal, this is for you! We spent the most enjoyable day ever with Frances and Milton cooking and making bread in their most charming farmhouse. As we kneaded bread while looking outside our window, we saw the horses roaming the beautiful fields. It was a wonderful sight to be so close to a perfect nature setting while making such delightful food!
Frances's organic farm is fabulous and she gave us a tour at the end of the day, as well as sent us home with fresh eggs and homemade jam. She is the perfect teacher and hostess, and makes the day very special for all! I can not wait to go back and book another class!

This was a full day hands on cookery course but more than that, Frances and her family, welcome you into their Algarvian home. You learn all about living in Portugal...you see first hand what it is like to live on a farm in the Algarve. You learn to cook local recipes. You shop in the local market for fish and vegetables. All the time Frances gives you tips she has picked up over the years in Portugal. I learned so much. The different types of breads with dried and fresh yeast. She gives you alternatives all the time. The octopus and the bacalhau have been fish I steered clear of cooking, Frances showed us how easy it is. We picked our salad leaves from her garden. And the tarte da nata we made for desert was to die for! We all sat round the family table and ate our prepared feast. Wine was plentiful. We made friends that day with the other guests. It was all great fun. As I say more than just a cookery course. It was great value too. I highly recommend you spend a day with this lovely family whether you live here, like me, or are here on holiday.

Some cooking schools you simply sit back, relax, maybe a grown-up drink and watch as the instructor prepares recipes and you take a few notes, to be tossed in the junk drawer once you get back home. Let's be very clear, this is NOT that type of school.

We arrived a bit late (thanks GPS) after having missed a sign and completing a bit of an off-road adventure.

PRO TIP: Put the location into your Google Maps BEFORE you set off and you won't have to drive around Aljezur village with your device out the window trying to sniff out WiFi. We were advised by Frances, and forgot.

A quick coffee and some coffee cake to get acquainted and we were shown around the kitchen which was to be our classroom. Straight away, hands washed, sleeves up and we were making bread dough for 3 kinds of breads - bread sticks for a late morning snack, pao con churico (bread with sausages), and bread rolls. While the dough was rising, we set off to the Aljezur market to buy fresh fish and octopus for dinner. Frances has a great relationship with the local vendors and gets what I think is the best of a pretty good and fresh looking inventory. When you're there several times a week, this happens!
Back to the farm, we rolled out our various breads and started making our various dishes for dinner.

Dinner consists of the days labours - we had bacalau, the staple Portuguese dried cod, with potatoes, peppers and cream, grilled octopus, octopus rice, a beautiful salad and tarte de nata (a cream pie with cookie crust) for dessert.

Its a full day, not a lot of standing around. You are involved from start to finish in the prep and construction of the meal with Frances providing clear, friendly instruction along the way. Milton, her son-in-law, is a master of cooking over a wood fire and we spent some time tending the octopus (don't cook a lot of this in Canada), grilling the fish while enjoying a glass of local wine.

Its a great day, the highlight of our visit to the Algarve, in a beautiful setting with two of the nicest people you'll meet.

You'll get a nice booklet of the recipes you made that day as a take-away - our dinners at home will certainly include some of the dishes we were shown how to prepare.

Three of us spent a day at Fran's farm learning to cook Portuguese specialties on a wood-fired stove and wood-fired grill. Somehow we managed a trip to the market and still found time to prepare bread sticks, a dip, bread, shrimp, fish, and dessert, all while sipping young green Portuguese wine. Fran and Milton have it all figured out. It was all hands-on and lots of fun. The location on top of a mountain was a bonus - goats, pigs, chickens, guinea hens, wonderful gardens, wonderful flowers.

I hugely recommend this wonderful cooking school. Not only for the fantastic and tasty food, but also for the nicest friendliest people in Algarve. Thank you Frances and Ozzy xx
