Val & I along with three friends went to see Ain’t Misbehavin last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. The performances by Jada Lark, Shantelle Eddy, Sabrina Lettsome and Alwyn Thomas brought the audience to their feet at the end of the evening.
I appreciate all four performances but have to signal out Mr. Thomas’ ‘Your Feet’s Too Big’ and Ms. Lettsome’s ‘Viper’s Drag’ as my personal favorites of the evening.
I also have to mention the band for their wonderful performance of the many Fats Waller songs.
We very much look forward to seeing their performances of The Wiz in February and Deathtrap in March.
Thank you to all involved in presenting us with a very enjoyable performance of Ain’t Misbehavin!

I have to admit being a New Yorker I’m probably spoiled with Broadway shows. When Val suggested attending Pistarckle’s Evita I was less than excited.
Well, Val, Jeanne and I went today and I was very pleasantly surprised. Everyone’s performance was great! The leading lady’s voice was beautiful and she gave a ‘Broadway’ performance!
This will be the first of many plays we see at the Pistarckle.
I want to give a special thank you to Chris who helped us get our seats and I did give a nice tip to the band.

Great experience and fun with the others at the table, try to guess the mystery. We laughed and talked with the cast to see it they would give us any hints. To make a long story short, we guess the correct character, but wrote down the wrong one. Nothing like clean fun

I hate to disparage the theater - it's a local labor of love, an opportunity for show biz dreamers to strut their stuff, and for young actors to get some experience. At the same time, it's sort of a hole-in-the-wall place, where you wonder what might fall on your head during the performance. I saw the musical Chicago there recently. The talent at the top of the cast was very good - that's a LOT of singing and dancing - but some of the other actors looked like housewives' night out. But if you want to support local theater, go and enjoy - and good for you.

Visited the Pistarckle Theater in April for a Musical.

The show was very good....performers were excellent.

This was the 3rd visit to Pistarckle.

Visitors should look for performances during their stay on St. Thomas.

There is more to St. Thomas than rum drinks, though you can get those at this theater, too. But for a great night out, a great house band, fine performers with great enthusiasm and skill, you shouldn't miss the opportunity to see great shows at a local theater seating just over 100 patrons. Has the feel of a good Off Broadway show. We saw Lieber and Stoller's "Smokey Joe's Cafe." On our first visit to St. Thomas, we were looking forward to the performance, but we never expected to leave riding high after a great night's performance. Don't walk, run (well, drive) to this gem of a theater.

The students were wonderful and the play excellent . we really enjoyed this part of St Thomas. It was a bit difficult to find at first but we found it and it was worth the drive.

Definition: ”A boisterous performance. Confusion. Said of a group gone out of control at a meeting of the Legislature of the V.I. which had got out of hand with all shouting and gesticulating at once, President Malloy remarked, “this is like a fish wharf.” To which Senator Earle Ottley quickly yelled above the din, ”‘Tis worse than a fish wharf; ’tis a pistarckle!”

The Pistarckle Theater in St. Thomas has an interesting name with ties to the VI, but if you go to the play tonight expecting a scene more fitting for Market Square on a Saturday morning, you are going to be sorely disappointed.

As you know from our post yesterday, a lucky Coconut Wire blogger had the opportunity to attend the “pay as you go” night for ‘RED’. This blogger would go again and again. The play was wonderful and thought provoking.

It is simple, almost. It’s about at artist (Mr. Mark Rothko) and his assistant during a tumultuous time in Rothko’s career. He has taken money to create pieces for the prestigious ”Four Seasons” restaurant. His work needs time and (many say) meditation to understand. During the course of his creating, he comes to the realization (with the help of his assistant) that his art will not get the attention it deserves. Those who love it and appreciate it will be unable to do so in a restaurant. Here is an example of one his pieces.

You can see how a piece like this one on the left may not just jump out at you with you actually engaging with it. The man had a point.

The play gives you an insider’s perspective on the creative process. Rothko describes his paintings being seen and sold by the public as “sending a blind child into a room full of razor blades”. The conflict between him and his assistant provide the audience with quote after profound quote that almost make you want to pause the play so you can chew on the concept a little longer.

There are only two actors in the play. One could think this could create awkward gaps in the play or possibly be a little boring. It is anything but. The good people in charge at Pistarckle held auditions in New York for the roles of Rothko and his assistant. As a result, Ronald Brown and Kevin Coubal are taking a break from winter in the city to entertain us!

Both men are professional actors and are very personable. They were a joy at the meet and greet. And yes, they have both seen an actual Rothko in person. If you have questions about the play/content/production/etc. after the play, they are more than willing to answer them and discuss.

The bloggers of the Coconut Wire highly recommend you get tickets and see this play so you too can decide you need to see it twice!
