Being a big fan of cooking, I thought I could not miss a cooking class while visiting Sichuan. Talking to Wonder at China Discovery, he suggested the experience of the Chuançais Museum: cooking class and visit of the museum. It was a wonderful idea!

Even if a little far from Chengdu city centre, the museum is set in a beautiful location and it is worth a visit with a peaceful garden and lily pond and traditional Chinese buildings. It is also very interesting to learning the long history of Sichuan cuisine while visiting the museum.

But the cooking class was the best! The kitchen itself was amazing; I learnt to prepare Sweet Panda Steamed Dumplings, Mapu Toufu and Kungpao Chicken with Evelyn as a great teacher. The explanation, all in English, was easy and clear and the result incredibly tasteful.

This is an experience I would recommend to any food lover!

I went back myself on this tour, which was apparently quite unusual as this is typically part of larger group tours. I took a subway and taxi, and it was a bit frightening being so far from Chengdu, in a more commercial/suburban area, but it worked out fine in the end to find the place. My tour guide was generous, and his English was great. The best part is the outside pavilion, where you can sample many traditional dishes. The only thing is that you can get too full to eat the food you cook yourself. Don’t expect to learn too much about how to cook Sichuan foods as this part was quick. You’ll get a few useful recipes to use back home, however. The facility was great, and everyone worked to make me feel welcome even though I was on my own. My tour guides even used his own phone app to get me a taxi back to the subway station.

I believed I would actually learn to cook some real Chinese dishes, but no, everything is prepared, all you've to do is fry, the certificate at the end felt silly, as I hadn't actually learned to cook anything. It's not the museum's fault, but it's so far out, I couldn't get taxi back to Chengdu despite having been assured at museum taxis were not issue. The resulting public transport back to Chengdu was almost 3hrs. The tour of museum was rushed, I was brought to 9 or 10 items and not given the freedom to actually explore museum. The whole experience was just about 2.5hrs, I had expected maybe 4hrs being a half day tour. Lots of time to explore museum and cook. Just for being so far out, the experience and everything, I just didn't think was with the journey or price. It's the only experience in China I regret having spent so much time on. China is amazing and there it's so much to see and do.

This is a fun event and good item to do with friends looking to socialize / do something different, families looking to do something together, people like me looking for an easy & enjoyable activity while fighting jet lag or just because you want to try something new.

Cooking class:
- Very enjoyable, well organized and would be great for situations noted above
- I didn’t learn new techniques or items along those lines which was fine
- Food tasted good and conversation with the instructor was fun

Grounds, museum and other items to note:
- The guide / cooking instructor spoke very good English and was a pleasure to talk with during the event.
- The museum is okay
- The grounds, including the pots where chili and soy sauce is aging, are very nice.

Bottom line: A enjoyable way to spend a few hours.

A great experience, once you finally get there. We gave ourselves over an hour to get there, and ended up being nearly half an hour late. For people going by metro/bus and not taxi from Chengdu center, it takes 45mins by metro to Xipilu, and nearly 1hr for the P22 bus - and the P22 stop is metro exit B, OPPOSITE side of the road, and no there aren't any signs when you exit the train station, we were walking around for 10mins before we saw one on the opposite end of the station.

Once we got there, we discovered we were the only ones on the tour that day, so our tour guide had waited for us! To make up the time before the place closed for the day, we had the cooking experience first instead of last, then an abbreviated tour though the museum. The guide was very knowledgeable and made the whole experience great fun. And the food, oh god, the food! Even though we cooked it ourselves it was fantastic, our guide was amazed that we finished it all!

My teenage sons and I visited this museum with Daisy from China Highlights. We explored the exhibits, ate a TON of the free sample foods, bought delicious sauces to bring home and then participated in a cooking class. It was a hoot! I was afraid that the day would be a bit of a letdown after the pandas the day before, but I was wrong. It was entertaining and delicious and felt very personalized since everyone at the museum was really friendly. Thanks Daisy and China Highlights for this experience.

We visited the museum as part as a tour and didn't really know what to expect but it turned out to be one of favourite places visit. This was mainly down to our personal chef/guide Michael.

We arrived at lunchtime and were greeted by a very friendly Michael, we were taken around the 'snack street' inside the museum and Michael explained what all the many different snacks were then gave us some to time to try each one. They were delicious and we ended up trying everything. There was a school trip and some big groups which really gave it some atmosphere but Michael insisted on bring our snacks to us so we didn't have to fight the crowds.

Michael gave us a passionate tour of the museum finding out about the history of Sichuan cuisine which was really interesting and the museum had some incredible artefacts. We saw how they made their chilli paste and watched a demonstration of the finest noodles.

Finally was the cooking tour, we had our private kitchen dining area and were given chef whites and aprons. Michael was our chef and showed us how to make some traditional Sichuan dishes. He was an encouraging and entertaining teacher and we had a lot of fun and then had a great meal with some very tasty dishes.

I would recommend this tour to anybody especially if Michael is your chef, his level of English was great and his passion and joy really resonated with the whole group.

An unusual place to visit. I went on a tour and had lunch in the museum. The place had some historical displays and a large area where Sichuan foods were served from various small stalls. All-you-can-eat, although the foods were not of high quality. There were numerous young students; they seemed excited about being to eat as much as they could.
