The Hyla Park Nature Preserve is pretty close to the city center of Fredericton and it is... sort of an adventure. Not a park with well signed trails, but perhaps that's the fun of letting 'real nature' run its course. Take gps/a smart phone with a map of the area pre-loaded to get around.

We live just up the street from this little park. It is really inbreeding and a great place to see birds, bugs and amphibians. There are a few trails and their maintenance is minimal. Is a great little place to pop into and explore for an hour or so. The main trail is stroller-friendly for a good stroller (like a Bob). The park is well connected to the Fredricton trail system for easy access. If they would develop more trails through this property we would be there a lot more. Much of the woods and marsh is sadly inaccessible so you don't get to enjoy it. What you can see is good, just wish you they had a few more trails.

My friend and I just took our kids on a tour of Hyla Park. We were guided by a very informative guide Kayla, she showed us 7 species of frog, beaver dams. The tour was approximately 45 minutes, where we caught frogs gently, learned which was a female or male and saw tadpoles! The kids loved the experience as did I! Thanks Kayla!

I came here on the weekend, and spent over 2 hours here. There is so much to see here. It can be a bit hard to walk around at times, since the ground is uneven and you have to jump over some narrow streams sometimes, but overall I had a great time. I brought a camera and got many excellent pictures on the scenery. If you're looking to waste a few hours enjoying nature, I highly recommend visiting this place!

Just off the Gibson walking trail at Greenwood Drive, this is a park in progress. It is a remarkably diverse marshy habitat, but like many urban habitats in North America, it has been abused (gravel hauling, a motor raceway, generally a dumping ground). The Nature Trust, little by little, is rehabilitating the natural spaces. The amphibious inhabitants are thriving, as are beavers, deer, foxes, waterfowl and songbirds. Naturally, the mosquitos thrive, too. Consider wearing long pants and sleeves rather than overdoing it on the insect repellent; while you are food for the bugs, they are food for the salamanders, birds, turtles and frogs.
The best way to learn about Hyla Park is to take a Frog Walk with the trained frog whisperers of the Nature Trust. You'll likely see a lot more frogs, salamanders and newts with these amphibian spotting geniuses. Bring your wellies!

We were looking for something fun to do in Fredericton and Hyla Park showed up in a google search. Frogs, lizards, dragon flies - it sound like an awesome way to spend the afternoon with our two boys.
It was miserable. There is no "park". There were no signs informing us of the animals found in the park (my guess is because there aren't any). The marsh was FULL FULL FULL of misquotes so if you do decide to go wear rubber boots, long pants, long sleeve shirt and lots of bug stray.

We found out about Hyla Park while googling ideas for new outdoor things to do with the kids in Fredericton. Run by the Nature Trust of New Brunswick, this park is located right in the middle of the city, on the north side. The trails are accessible from either the city trail system, or a parking lot behind the United Baptist Church. Unfortunately, there's no signage or trail signs to speak of, so it's best to have the map from the website handy as you navigate around. (I can't add the URL here, but click the map at the bottom of the Hyla Park web page to get the PDF trail map)
Many of the trails were obstructed by fallen trees following Hurricane Arthur. Also, since the park is obviously not well used (or well-known), the trails can be hard to identify.
Regardless, we spent several hours wandering along, seeing dozens of frogs and giant dragonflies. It was a great way to spend an afternoon without having to go very far.
