Another fabulous day at this reserve. We first visited with the children when they were aged 9 to 12. Now they are in their late 30s/early 40s we are still coming. It never fails to impress and again this year we were not disappointed. Ospreys, warblers, dragonflies, marsh harriers to name a few. We love the cafe and the upgrades are fantastic.
No bitterns or spoonbills this year but never mind. There’s always next year.

Beautiful site and lots of hides to watch the bird life. However the cafe is a rip off.
£8 for half a small ciabatta with toasted cheese a tablespoon mixed veg and a few lettuce leaves. Most of the snacks over £8.

I have been visiting since the mid 1980's and have yet to be disappointed by the reserve. The hides have good aspects, although the sea hides don't favour late evenings on sunny days as they face west. Pretty much level walking acros the whole reserve, which for my arthritic knee is a godsend. The track to the sea hides is in poor repair but that is probably outside of RSPB control, do not attempt in wet weather unless you have a high wheelbase vehicle, some of the potholes are monstrous, in dry weather you can just about drive around them. Just wish it were closer to home so I could go every week.

We drove up to spend a few hours at the two hides on the edge of the bay.
Two things struck me with our visit over the New Year. The first is the state of the track down to the car park. Thankfully we have a crossover, so managed to get down, albeit very slowly. Anyone in a car or low vehicle would have great difficulty. I wouldn’t call them potholes, more like black holes, I fear if a small car went in one, it would never be seen again. This needs some serious maintenance sooner rather than later, before someone leaves their exhaust in one of the lakes.
The second issue, which isn’t the fault of the RSPB, but should be dealt with by them, is the rubbish brought in by the high tides. It’s not very nice to sit in the hide looking out at a tide mark full of buckets, plastic bottles and rope, to name a few items.

Hi - thanks for your message. I'm not sure who were advised by but I am very happy to say that they were misinformed! The cafe is open to everyone, and we welcome both those who are visiting the nature reserve and those who simply wish to stop by for refreshments. We look forward to seeing you soon!

I went into the shop at the Silverdale RSPB to be met by the most delightful geordie gentleman. He was so friendly and entertaining and I have never felt so comfortable in a retail setting. He was extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of birds and equipment. He was well presented and I think his name was Dave. I would come back and visit just to interact with the gentleman again. What a delight 5 stars.

A beautiful day out, perfect for all. Good paths for anyone with mobility issues. Some excellent views from the various platforms. We had the opportunity to see some spectacular wildlife. Lovely to see it fairly busy, good parking available. Cafe is located upstairs.

We came here to stretch our legs and do a little bird watching. There are different paths for varying abilities all maintained to a high standard parking good and toilet facilities good .

We had a great visit to the reserve with our grandchildren. The day looked grey but we managed our visit without getting wet. We saw a number of water birds but our grandchildren were most impressed to see the deer at close range from one of the hides. The weather must have deterred other visitors as we had the hides to ourselves.

Hello Jane - thank you for visiting and for posting your review here! We're delighted to hear that you and your grandchildren got such wonderful views of the deer - and to have the hide to yourselves must have been an added treat! We often see fewer visitors on those days with bad forecasts but our micro-climate often results in quite different weather conditions than those expected. We hope to see you again soon!

We have been here several times now in search of the elusive Bitterns that breed here but als , not sighted yet but heard.
We love it here. It’s a lovely gentle walk around the site with hides to watch the birds & other animals from . Last visit we watched Ospreys fishing , Marsh Harriers patrolling the margins, geese, ducks & gulls galore. One area where there is a platform to watch the birds going to the feeders is next to the entrance. We had some really good close up action of Green , Gold , Bull & Chaffinches along with Great , Blue , Long Tail , Coal tits. A buck & two doe Red deer ventured out from the high reeds to feed to top our visit off.
Well worth a visit if you’re in the area.
