We do like our wine and we also like Blues music, so this wine tasting event, with a live blues band, at the renowned wine merchants ‘Averys’, was a really good fit for us. We had booked months ago at a cost of £40 each. It was a chance to be out and doing something in what remains one of the worst months in any year for ‘doing things out’.
The Averys wine cellars was the venue; just behind the City Centre, close to where College Green bridges Frog Lane. These cellars are wonderfully evocative, old and bearing the scars of the years when wine was stored and aged here. Now it has become a great event centre.
The format was to pitch-up at 19:00 and be shown to our table. As a couple you share tables with other customers; so there was another younger couple who were seated with us. On the way to the table we were offered a glass of Cava which was pleasant, but not my favourite. I rarely drink fizz; except an occasional Crémant shared with my Partner.
Our main host announced all wines with a short intro of what you should experience in tastes and aromas. She did this very well, without bothering us with too much detail. The band was led by a vocalist who has a day-time job here at Averys, so he also chipped-in with tasting notes.
After each wine was served and described, there was a session of music, with every blues number having some (often extremely tenuous) link to viniculture. Some links were a bit strained, but greeted with good-hearted amusement by ‘us patrons’.
Provided on the table was a selection of four cheeses. A ‘Langres’ - a soft and decidedly flavoured cow's milk cheese from Ardennes (France). A ‘Caerphilly’ - a hard crumbly white cow’s milk cheese from (of course) Wales. A ‘Marechal’ - a hard and possibly aged cow’s milk cheese (with a stronger taste) from Switzerland. Finally a ‘Bleu d'Auvergne’ - a French blue cheese (as the name suggests); again cow’s milk, very creamy and slightly spicy. These cheeses went down well with the four of us. The cheese was accompanied by a generous basket of interesting-looking bread varieties; again good, with some sourdough I believe. My favourite was the Marechal’ was my favourite: it had a similar (but milder) taste to a vintage Cheddar (and without the mineralisation).
It wasn’t long before we were presented with our first (quite small) wine sample: an Australian Riesling ‘Bleasdale Adelaide Hills’ 2022. I recall drinking Riesling when I enjoyed small glasses of wine at home with my Parents; I was about 13 years old. Shades of Blue Nun and Black Tower came-to-mind when we saw this wine on the ‘play list’ here tonight. We had, however, no need to be overly concerned; as this Riesling was certainly a cut-above the wine I experienced 50-odd years ago. This wine was dry and fruity, and very refreshing; it actually turned out to be our favourite non-fortified wine of the evening. Going back to my youth, Reising or Liebfraumilch wine was about £1 a bottle which was moderately expensive (equivalent now is about £15). Blue Nun is now about £7 a bottle, and this Reising’s RRP is £17.99.
The second wine to taste was a Viognier ‘Queen Bee’ 2022 from South Africa (Western Cape). It was good for a Viognier (generally we don’t prefer this variety) but this one was different; having tropical fruit-filled flavours.
The next two wines were reds (a ‘Tbilvino Qvevris Saperavi’ 2020 from Georgia and a ‘Domain de Mourchon’ (traditional Côte du Rhone). We “don’t-do” red wine, but happily we were offered some substitute whites: the first was to enjoy an extra tasting of the Viognier, and then experience a white Burgundy that was equally as pleasant.
Lastly it was “home ground” for me; a 10 y.o. non vintage Tawny Port from the Douro. This was very good indeed and I could have happily sat drinking this for some time … but the evening came to an end. The band played ‘Glory Box’ as a last number, a John Martyn song covered, in 1994, by a local group called ‘Portishead’ - yes … another, but less tenuous, link … alluding (this time) to a very good fortified wine.
It was a very enjoyable evening, but the measures of wine served were a bit mean. Whereas the cost, in terms of the wine alone, it was expensive; it was an evening with good entertainment and enjoyment. Would we go again? Well to be fair it feels as though it was a tick-in-the-box … but never-say-never.

Averys has a great website for buying wine, but if you are close enough to go to their Bristol store it is well worth the visit. Friendly helpful staff, loads of stock with good offers, and the star of the show: their building. Exposed stonework, vaulted ceilings, a large event space, it is oozing with atmosphere and makes the shopping experience really special!

Recently went to a screening of ‘Carry on screaming’ in Averys wine cellars. It was part of the Bristol Film Festival and an absolutely fabulous night. The evening included a great selection of wines to taste and variety bread and cheese to try.

Had the best time ever at Averys for our Christmas party. We have booked this venue again for this year as everyone enjoyed it so much. Perfect venue for a party. Lovely staff and good spot in the centre of Bristol. Drinks a little pricey. I would highly recommend.

Averys is one the best independent wine merchants, offering wines of flair, flavour and character often neglected by the multiple distributors.

We were given the experience as a present. We had a wonderful evening tasting eight different wines accompanied by lovely cheeses and bread.
Staff were both very knowledgeable and easy to talk to. If you get a chance to go.....go, we'll certainly be returning, cheers!

I have experienced Avery's both as a guest and as a performer. The moment I walked down the staircase to the cellars below I knew this was a special place. The wine cellars date back to Bristol's early history to the days of Blackbeard.
You can just sense the age of this cellar. Anyway Avery's uses this cellar for wine tasting events and corporate functions. What an amazing place, it just oozes character and is the perfect place to host a company function. The Avery's team headed by Frank are amazing. They present a wine tasting evening that is fun and engaging.
I have also performed my magic show "Moments in Time" at the venue and must say from a performers perspective the Avery's staff went all out to make the evening an amazing success.
This is definitely a venue that's worth booking for a company function. Or if you are looking for an amazing wine tasting evening look no further. In addition the shop is stocked with an amazing selection of wines from all over the world !!

My friend and I went to a wine tasting course here. We had a 50% discount voucher so we paid £15 to try 8 wines which were accompanied with cheese, pate and bread. It was an amazing experience. The staff were friendly and informative and the atmosphere was amazing. The wine was incredible as was the food. I would have happily paid full price and I hope to visit again.

Don't buy wine from supermarkets. If you do, you will generally be getting poor value for money. That is my experience so far of buying vast amounts of wine form every source imaginable.
Averys have all day tastings every day. Very impressive. They give you proper wine advice and the staff are all knowledgable. I can't rate them highly enough
