One of the magnificent 7 London cemeteries, assessable and worth a visit. A must visit if this is your thing, the Victorians certainly did death well.

John gave a fascinating and informative guided tour of the cemetery. This is my fourth tour in the last year, and each one was enjoyable and different. Thank you.

Our group, Urbanwise.London were lucky to have a guided walk with John. We had a lovely time and heard many stories about the people buried here and learned alot about the history of the site. John was both friendly and knowledgeable. It was a great morning and I am sure we will be back to explore again.

We booked a tour with the Friends of Kensal Green and had John as our guide for two hours. The exterior maps are clouded over with damp, and we surely would have gotten frustrated wandering around without John, who was extremely knowledgeable. The tour ended with a stop at the Dissenters Chapel, but it was too hot to linger, so we declined the offer for tea. The tour was well worth the negligible fee. As to the cemetery itself:it is the oldest of the so-called Magnificent Seven, and is very historic. It isn’t in the best repair, and part of the stone wall has been replaced by metal scaffolding, which isn’t the best look. Highgate is more atmospheric (both sections) but Kensal Green is well worth visiting, especially if you book a tour. You will come away with a real understanding of Victorian London, though it is still an active cemetery.

The cemetery is beautiful! The first of the magnificent seven, full of history and beautiful graves.
However, after doing the tour in other cemeteries in London, we thought that this one it was going to be good too,
It was terrible! The guide didn’t like answer questions about graves that weren’t on the tour and he was rude about it!
It took us around the same place twice and when we didn’t know the person that he was talking about, he just walked away muttering..
It was so bad and boring, that we left before visiting the catacombs.
I wrote to the friends of Kensal Green cemetery, the people that do the tours, and told me that that person wasn’t a tour guide, just someone who stepped in that Sunday..
Disappointing to say the least..

We appreciate you taking the time to leave a review of your recent guided tour, and we are sorry it didn't live up to your expectations. I believe we have been in touch privately. Kind Regards, Nicki.

I'm gradually ' doing ' The Magnificent 7 cemeteries. My last one was Brompton which is pretty spectacular & very well maintained so when I passed through the main entrance at Kensal Green & turned right to follow the path parallel to the wall & Harrow Rd I compared the two ( despite Oscar Wilde stating that " Comparisons are Odious " ). I was not impressed. The boundary wall varies in condition from good to reduced in height to being propped up by scaffolding. Further on there is a pillared arcade which seems to be backed by modern flats. Returning to Kensal Green Station later I verified this plus noting a large Brazilian Restaurant underneath the flats.
After a while I came to realise what a vast place this is & far more interesting than my first impression. The more modern graves illustrate the diverse population of the area.
People from Ethiopia , The Caribbean , Italy, Ireland & many more places are laid to rest here.
Apart from many ornate old mausoleums & crypts I was interested to come across modern ones of Italian provenance.
Sadly , the Anglican Chapel is in poor repair & fenced off for safety reasons.
Many famous people are interred here & a list is easily accessed on - line.
One person who was temporararily interred here was Jind Kaur , the mother of the last Maharajah of The Punjab who died in Kensington & was later cremated in Nashik , Maharashtra , India. See memorial at The Dissenter's Chapel.
I came here via Bakerloo line from Marylebone but due to signalling problems returned via Overground to Euston which was much more airy & comfortable.
The Cemetery opened in 1833. Hardly saw another soul during my visit apart from a cremation gathering.

Dogs are not allowed in here (sadly). Not even on a lead and equipped with poo bags apparently ! So we walked around some very impressive graves and mausoleums. Some real gothic treasures in here - v photogenic. Didn’t find Freddy Mercurys resting place sadly. But some v evocative and skillfully constructed tombs. Well worth a visit. Bring wellies / boots in winter as several paths are flooded. And don’t bring your dog !

I got there walking via the Gran Union Canal, and Kensal Green Tube and Overground are a short walk away.
The Cemetery is absolutely massive going back almost 200 years. I stayed for at least two hours looking around the old graves, statues and crypts, and only covered about a quarter of the place. There are benches to relax on and to take in the peacefulness of the place. Well worth a few visits.
There are websites for more information and history.
A lovely place to visit.

Went on the tour of Kensal Green Cemetery yesterday, our guide Jen, is one of the dedicated members of the Friends of Kensal Green Cemetery. I cannot recommend this friendly and informative tour highly enough.
Jen and her colleagues give their time, enthusiasm and passion to the upkeep of their wonderful place. Full of stories and information, delivered with humour and sympathy as appropriate, this was a brilliant way to spend just over two hours and learn so much.
Wonderful place and definitely worth a visit.

Freddie Mercury was created at Kensal Green and the cremated remains were collected from the Cemetery.

So what is that big circular structure that shows up in photos and tv shows?

695Visitor, are you sure that you went to the General Cemetery of All Souls, Kensal Green, and not St. Mary's, next door? Did you walk as far as the Grade I Listed Anglican Chapel? All Souls is a Grade I Listed park and garden with wildflowers from the meadows that preceded the cemetery, specimen trees planted in the 1830s, plenty of birds, and 153 Grade II and II* Listed monuments, plus hundreds more of similar quality. As of early May, large tracts are still unstrimmed, to provide habitat for wildlife. Your review doesn't sound like the same cemetery! Or even St. Mary's, which has a fine little chapel, and some very handsome monuments.
