The church was orginally built in early 12th century and dedicated to St.Andrew, but about 1400 it was rededicated to St.Mary the Virgin.. It has a photograph upon the wall of EDITH CAVELL whose father was the Rev Fredrick Cavell, vicar from 1864-1910..The East window is the EDITH CAVELL Memorial window, installed in 1917 (2 years after her death in Brussells)...Outside the church is the war memorial with E.CAVELL top of the list.... Turn out from the church to the left and you will aventualy arrive at the village sign with her face engraved on the signpost...If you have time cross over from the church and your see CAVELL CLOSE named after the british war nurse hero

As you arrive at this church you pass the village war memorial and note that the name at the top of the list is Edith Cavell (she is at the top because of alphabetical order) and that sets the tone for this church. Without her connection then this would be an ordinary, but still quite nice, village church. Inside, I found a memorial window dedicated to her, plus a large portrait of her, and you can almost feel her presence within the building. Edith's father was rector at this church and she grew up in the village. I got the impression that the village is very proud of its heroine daughter.

This simple medieval church is enhanced by its association with Nurse Edith Cavell, the British Nurse shot by the Germans in Brussels in 1915. A visit to this church is easily joined with a visit to nearby Norwich Cathedral where her remains are buried, and which has a number of memorials to her. Every two years around the anniversary of her death in early October, a 2 day Flower Festival is held in this church and around the village, which I have just attended - magnificent. There were around 30 huge flower arrangements throughout the church, amazing in their colour and ingenuity. A tea room was open all day on both days of the Festival next to the church for this occasion - I'm not sure of its normal opening hours, but there is a pub and a bakers in the village.

On these occasions, there are also the usual attractions associated with village fetes, here with particular reference to this brave nurse, eg displays of memorabilia : Her father was Vicar in this small village just outside Norwich.
