Located in Cardigan Street in Oxford city is this pretty excellent church, St. Barnabas, and is great to see from the outside. It was closed when we visited which was a shame as we would have loved to come inside.

My friend wanted to see this famous Byzantine pile, so I took him down there. My great grandfather had sung in the choir for nearly 40 years and my grandparents attended all their married life. It is a special place, completely deserving its title of the Venetian basilica. To those on friendly terms with the ugly old thing it is known as Barney :)

Not always open, it is well worth confirming when you can go and checking they can have the Church open for you. St Barnabas is and Anglo Catholic Church dating rom the 1860s and the Oxford Movement, the outside is plain except for a remarkable high tower, but the interior is moving, atmospheric and full of wonderful decoration. It is the Parish Church for the Jericho district, close to the City Centre of Oxford so only a short walk away from the main Oxford attractions.
