The Holywell Music Room is mainly used for classical chamber music concerts, for which it has an outstandingly good acoustic. A recent Sunday afternoon concert organised by the Oxford Chamber Music Society and given by the Doric String Quartet was a case in point. the hall was full - we had to wait outside in the mizzle to see if they had sufficient spaces for those who hadn't bought tickets in advance, so arriving with plenty of time to spare (when they were still able to sell on the door tickets without constraint) might be a good idea.
There are no refreshments, and somewhat limited toilet access; some of the seats are just benches and other lack padding, but it's worth putting up with slightly uncomfortable seats for the excellent sound in this historic venue.

Went to see a concert. It was a lovely venue. Very intimate. Staff were really nice. The acoustics were good

We attended the May Day concert of Magpie Lane, a local folk group who have a considerable following. My daughter, who is autistic, has all their CDs. The Music Room was the perfect setting - no need for microphones or any sort of amplification, and the seats are tiered so wherever you sit you are able to see. An easy task for the folk group to establish a good relationship with the audience and to ensure we participated by singing the choruses. There were concessions on the tickets, but whether that is a general policy or just applied to the concert we went to I can't say. Good arrangements for people with wheelchairs who could be given places on the level without having to manoeuvre up stairs.

I visited Holywell Music Room in Oxford today.
They have top class Sunday coffee concerts on Sundays at 11.15 am. I almost don’t want to write this review so that it doesn’t get overcrowded!
Holywell is the OLDEST concert hall in all of Europe! Today they has delightful pieces sonatas and short pieces from Beethoven, Schoenberg and Schuman.
You can also get a free coffee nearby with your ticket!

Old but bright and acoustically excellent music room. Thoroughly enjoyed our lunchtime concert today.

I recently heard a solo piano recital in the Holywell Music room. Acoustics are generally excellent, and if you want to watch the keyboard it's easy to sit on the sides for a really close up view. The seats are padded bench seats, but not uncomfortable. Tickets for concerts here can often be bought on the door.

One the oldest music rooms still in active service. Small, intimate, marvelous acoustics. Opens every Sunday for a "coffee concert" at 11h, booking in advance is highly recommended (via Oxford Playhouse)

Attended a recital in this 270 year-old music hall, and was impressed by the openness of the facility and the sense of bonding with the performers; well-run events of excellent quality. Try to include a visit to Holywell when you're next in Oxford.

If you fancy something different to the usual large concert Orchestra, this is for you. Up close and personal concertos with just two or three musicians playing cello, violin, piano, depending on the piece.

I recently went to watch my old school's brightest musicians playing an evening of chamber music here, and was delighted by the excellent acoustics, and welcoming shape of the room, for an audience member. The gents' bathroom could do with some work though - bit too "personal", if one if trying to have a private moment in the loos, shall we say!

Best to use the Red Bridge Pak and Ride, catch the bus in to the City Centre from there otherwise parking may be frustrating
