Unusual museum worth the visit.

The Museo dell'ombrello e del parasole at Gignese is quite a revelation. It is, as far as I know, the only one of its kind in the world. It is situated in the village of Gignese which is a short but very pretty bus ride up in the mountains behind Stresa in via Panorama Golf. It takes you through the evolution of umbrella and parasol styles from the early 1800s to the present day. There are over 1000 individual items, from delicately embroidered parasols to handles made from the most exquisite and exotic materials hand-carved with some of the most intricate and beautiful designs you'll ever see on an umbrella handle. I'd never have believed that such a mundane object could be transformed into a work of art. There are umbrellas owned by famous people and a whole section devoted to the umbrella makers themselves, their lives, tools and working conditions which makes for some very interesting reading. You can even buy umbrellas there and for 20 euros I picked up a souvenir umbrella. It was raining on the day of my visit, just like in the episode of 'Buongiorno Italia'. Although the weather was foul I had a great time and was enchanted by the beauty of the place.

Very nice small museum.

Our family enjoyed the visit very much. About 10-15 min. by car from the lake at Sresa. A very unique display of umbrellas and related items. If you like unique special displays and museums - this is certainly a place to visit. Allow about 30-45 min. Covers the history and making of umbrellas. A nice twist:- there is a discount on the entrance fee when it rains :-)
