Visited with the family for the recent Model train show (Feb 23). First time that we have visited, and we will be back. A great little line. Only a diesel running on the day of the visit (we were aware of his) and only half the line used (part of the old S&D route). The train was very tidy and on time. The staff were friendly and helpful (especially considering the excited 4 and 8 year old's we had in tow). A great day out on a grey February day.
Thanks. We will be back.

We took three grandchildren ages 7, 5,4 last Sunday to share this day. Luckily for me their preference is for the Steam train and we enjoyed 35 minutes on our train journey. With large areas of cut grass to run about on, a book shop with oo gauge working layout and their cafe we all had a fabulous time

I had a unique chance to travel on narrow gauge along part of the Somerset and Dorset railway route, having the feel of being on a full size railway.
Friendly staff and well set up working rolling stock with signalling to match.
Ideal for a quiet journey back in time.

Built on part of the route of the S and D. Not open often but worth keeping an eye open for when it is. Friendly line with lovely locos and stock in beautiful surroundings.

Staying nearby in Holton gave the perfect excuse to visit this friendly little line. For a family run line that is only open to the public half a dozen or so days a year the facilities are superb. Professionally run the 1030 left at 1030!

Two steam locos and one diesel were working the three train service, a round trip took 35 mins and trains ran every 25 mins.

Catering was good, loos very clean, a nice little shop and many items of goods wagons around as well as the three sets of coaches. Not a very long line but it makes up for it in character and finesse. Sadly we only did one trip as we were heading back to Kent but the ticket allows unlimited travel all day.

Next time i will spend a whole day line-siding and riding the line.

Great little railway, very friendly staff price very resonable nice long journey.
Very tidy railway no derelict stock everywhere good views.
Restaurant was well priced but could do with a healthier option or veggie disc or two.

The Gartell Light Railway is a hidden gem for steam train enthusiast's and the curious both young and old . An excellent fun way to entertain grandchildren . The compact site gives a fascinating insight to how a steam railway is operated and controlled just on small scale ,for people who just want to ride the trains then there is plenty of that .Also worth a look in the signal boxes if you can , a world away from modern technology but just a confusing.

I have been to Gartells many times and it’s always a fun day. Only a short track but it’s great to be on a train pulled by a proper steam train, tbf the little diesel is fun too. Wholesome, simple food and a great place for a little ones birthday.

I was really impressed with the operation of the train service. They run every 20 minutes, and there are reversals and run-rounds along the way to keep the interest level up. As a signalling buff I was in my element, as the quantity and quality of the signalling systems puts most preserved railways to shame - and they're happy to explain it all to you if you want. It's not the longest or most scenic train ride you'll ever do, but well worth a visit nonetheless.

Only one steam train operating on the day I visited, but they usually try to have two steam and one diesel trains. The carriages are cute, and colour-coded so that you can tell if you've ridden them all.

There's a pleasant small lake and the opportunity to picnic in a nice location with trains buzzing around.

We arrived at midday on a bank holiday and were surprised that it was not crowded, we liked that. After crossing the covered footbridge we were greeted by an outside dining area, a gift/model shop, a cafe, and the hustle and bustle of the small narrow gauge trains at the platforms. For a modest sum we purchased tickets for any train for the rest of the day. We set off for a ride of about 30 minutes+ 3 stations en route. We had the choice of riding behind both diesel and steam.
