I was driving from the Veneto to the Coast - and made my stop of the day in the historic city of Ferrara - with memories of the novel/film: The Garden of the Finzi - Contini's creating an image. This new Museum, located in Ferrara tells the story of 2,000 years of Jewish Life in Italy - the integration of this small community and it's survival through various stages of the formation of the Italian State. Of interest is the Special Exhibit concerning Jewish Life during the Renaissance. One of the best curated and organized museums in the world. Bravo.

The synagogue is currently under renovation and not open for tours since the 2012 earthquake damaged the building. If you wish to attend a Saturday morning service, you may be able to do so by calling ahead.

During our walk through the city, we found the Jewish Museum and wanted to have a look inside. We knocked on the door but no one answered. As we were about to continue on our way, we happened to see someone leaving, so we quickly ran back before the door closed. We asked the gentleman if we could go in but were told that the museum wasn't open to anyone, due to the 'earthquake'. It didn't make sense to us, as others were inside. Quite a disappointment!

Let's be clear, this is not a review of the actual museum, but of the organisation running it. My wife and I were told that a guided tour was available at midday only, and turned up at 11.15. There was quite a crowd already. The doorman told us that he had 28 people waiting so far and that the limit was maybe 30. "Maybe" because often it depended on how the guide was feeling, apparently. Sometimes 25 were allowed, sometimes 35. Who could say? (A sigh; a shrug). Anyway, we said we'd wait. Another small group arrived. The doorman told them he had 28 people waiting so far. "Shouldn't that be 30?" I asked my wife. And we waited. Finally a large group came out. Then an authoritative gent suddenly burst through the waiting crowd, braced himself in the doorway, and gestured vigorously over our heads. Another large group started filing through our ranks and entered the museum. "What about us?" we asked the doorman. A sigh; a shrug. "It's a pre-booked party. None of you can get in." Incredible. A 45 minute standing wait for nothing. This is the kind of organisation that gives Italian tourism a bad name.
