Lovely little spot on the Great River Ouse - plenty of places to sit on your own. Lots of nature and the sound of running water to calm the soul

Arrived shortly before our booked slot and managed to squeeze into the small car park as it was quite busy on a Saturday morning.
Met up with our guide and signed in as NT members. Lots of interesting features about the mill, its history and the local area were provided but at times there was too much detail and the tour was protracted.
Inside the large mill the grinding process was explained and some demos undertaken as the waterwheel was not in operation and no milling undertaken. Details of how the mill was used as a Youth Hostel also provided.
Further info and tales provided by another volunteer who knew the workings of the machinery.
In general tour very good but basically too long. Some areas with pictures of the process were roped off.

Houghton Mill NT Tearoom
Well run, high quality tearoom open seven days a week, with mainly outdoor seating at the moment. Selling a good selection of cakes and sweet treats as well as hot pasties and a few other savoury item such as sausage rolls and sandwiches. Our pasties (we chose traditional Cornish but there were several non-meat varieties also) were served hot straight from the oven and were really delicious. Bacon rolls etc were an option for Sunday brunch. The staff were friendly and helpful, being careful with their COVID system. Open air tables in a neat grassy area beside the tearoom next to the mill and the River Ouse. Compostable disposable takeaway cartons and cutlery available and while I see the reasons I will be much happier (ecologically speaking) when the National Trust stop using these ‘single use’ items and return to using real china and their dishwashers to provide a safe eating environment.

Booked an hour canoeing from the mill. The people who run this are lovely and very helpful. Really reasonable would definitely recommend and they also sent us pictures of the family canoeing!

We didn't do the tour of the mill but used the tea-rooms and also used it as a base to walk from. There are lovely walks in multiple directions including along the river. Tea-rooms were limited due to Covid restrictions but a lovely cup of tea and a brownie.

Boat hire was great..fantastic hour spent mucking about with the grand kids..Only the rude man in the mill shouting at people in the water to get out cos the wheel was turning...I have been here many times and have never known anyone so rude..maybe he needs a training day on customer skills...

In a small picturesque village, great for canoeing cycling walking situated by the water.
The campsite is well run by very helpful friendly staff. The facilities are spotless and well maintained. It's absolutely faultless.

The camp site couldn't be faulted and the people running the camp site and the mill couldn't have been more helpful.
