I really enjoyed taking my latest steam train ride. The “staff” are all volunteers who genuinely love the old railways, and you can tell by their enthusiasm that they want to be there, and their knowledge of the machines and their history is both comprehensive and engaging. The costumes they wear are in many cases genuine period clothing that they have personally collected. The physical experience of being inside one of the older railway carriages literally transports you to memories of your youth in a very evocative way. The prices are ridiculously cheap when you consider what they provide. Imagine people selling rides in 100 year old cars, or flights on 100 year old planes. Many of the steam engines are more than a century old. The RPSI people manage to run them in between the regular train services. That is very remarkable. There are all sorts of different steam train rides on offer, with many themed on certain occasions throughout the year. Proof of the quality of what is on offer is the fact that the next few outings to come are always sold out. Highly recommended.

Avoid the Santa train!
For £15/person you get a dirty carriage with two miserable bits of tinsel. Santa appeared briefly in a budget costume and the only interaction with our children was to ask there age.
This is not a magical Santa experience and left us all disappointed. Don't waste your money.
I contacted them via their website with my complaints and they have not bothered to reply. I work in the hospitality industry and will be telling everyone I can to avoid this rip off.

Had a fantastic day from start to finish on Portrush Flyer. Would recommmend for everyone to try at least once. The Volunteers spend so much time so that future generations can enjoy it.

For only two pounds fifty steam train rides are available every Saturday all through July and August at the Railway Preservation Society of Ireland base in Whitehead. This is where Whitehead Railway Museum is. I had a ride in the no. 3BG Guinness steam engine. You get shunted up and down twice over from the Excursion Station to just through under the King's Bridge. She was built in 1919 for the famous Guinness drinks firm. Kids immediately notice the resemblance to the character Thomas the Tank Engine. This is a very oddly enjoyable experience. The old-style carriages you sit in immediately evoke childhood memories, or children's dreams of trains to Hogwarts. People on the platform who are taking the next train, or have finished their ride, wave at you, and its fun to wave back. The people driving the engine, and the conductors, are all enthusiasts, unpaid volunteers. They are among the unsung heroes of RPSI who have worked for 50 years now saving and restoring the engines, carriages and machinery from bygone days. The museum tour is very good; they happen on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. There is even a brand-new Toast the Coast walking tour of Whitehead that includes a guided look around the museum, and high tea in a railway carriage. Tea, buns and sandwiches are oddly very enjoyable in these exclusive surroundings. You think you're on the Orient Express! Odd fact: you're taken under King's Bridge on these runs. 99 years ago the engine ran from the Guinness factory to join the main line at a station called Kingsbridge.

Great night out.
Lovely way to travel and enjoy the scenery and the jazz band.
You can bring your own picnic and drinks or buy them on board.
Very well organised .Everyone was welcomed and made to feel at home.
Staff and Volunteers all worked very hard to make it a very pleasant trip.
Train carridges were very comfortable and very clean.
Would definitely recommend this and would love to go again.

First time leaving a review but felt I had to so no other families wasted their money only to be disappointed with a very poor trip.
Had heard good review so booked this for 2 adults and 2 young children (5 & 2)
Paid nearly £60 for basically a 45 minute train journey and back again.......stopped for half an hour at Whitehead but all there was was a small cafe which was so crowded you were tripping over each other and 90% of people had no chance of getting somewhere to stand, let alone a seat.
Someone dressed as an Easter Bunny literally rushed as quickly as possible through the carriage with someone behind them giving out Easter Eggs to the children, no interaction at all and not a word about an Easter Treasure Hunt.
Not one for leaving negative reviews at all but this was so disappointing and hugely overpriced and I cannot understand how it has received any positive reviews :-(
Worth noting that the staff as a whole were generally very helpful and friendly.

The steam train museum was very interesting for all the family. A ride on these magnificent old trains is a real thrill. It's like being in a movie...then finished off with a lovely lunch in the whitehead railway museum cafe. Great food at a good price.highly recommend.

Something different ana great night out. Boarded the steam at Central station with our picnic hamper and some wine. We had booked a lovely private little compartment which was ours for the evening. We had 2 stops along the way where the jazz band jumped out and set up and played familiar numbers ... the crowd danced along. Suitable for all ages over 18 and would strongly recommend.

How easy is it to get from titanic exhibition to steam trains and what is the best way
Steveodo

There are steam trains on certain occasions running on the main line. The Bangor Belle would take the line past the Titanic place - but only on certain days a year. The site where the steam trains are kept, in a museum / workshop is in Whitehead. Take a Larne line train north from Lanyon Place station in Belfast, get off at Whitehead, walk along Chester Avenue and take a left turn onto Castleview Lane. Its up there. There is a separate Tripadvisor listing for Whitehead Railway Museum with pictures.
Where can I find actual information on purchasing tickets and bookings? That website had nothing where you can put a credit card number in and secure your tour..
