Take a final opportunity to see this 'historic' museum before the exhibitions are relocated to the new Chau Chak Wing museum upon its completion. There are only 2 more weeks left before the old museum closes its doors forever :(

Quite full on. If you wanna see a mummy and brush up on ancient Egyptian history, then this is the place to be at.
The campus (University of Sydney) is quite beautiful so you can pretty much make it into a picnic kinda day after visiting the museum.

It’s small, but well laid out, well signed and has a great collection of artefacts (in particular Egyptian and Greek). It’ll be great to hopefully see more of the collection on display when they move into their larger purpose built building next year. Entry is free.

This Museum has been going for ages and has been the beneficiary of some great endowments from individuals starting with Nicholson himself. The Museum is fascinating and has regular seminars and events related to its themes - Ancient Mesopotamia through Egypt, Greece and Rome. It has some amazing artifacts. There are also some great stories of Australian archaeologists working in the Near East from last century and there are still digs going on in Jordan and Cyprus operating out of Sydney Uni. The Museum is set in the great and architecturally scenic Quadrangle at Sydney Uni.

Very small hard to find museum, no signs & website states road within ground Sydney University but no map. Go to the quadrangle follow main building to the left. If you haven’t been lucky enough to visit archeological museums in Middle East & Europe to see Antiquities then this is worth a visit. Amazed to see Antiquities like this in Australia although many items out of context being purchased at markets, good to see this acknowledged on the excellent signage. Beware of school groups 3 when I visited which in such a small space rather spoilt the visits, the kids were good it was the loud teachers.

Through years of studying at Sydney Uni, I never came here, even though it’s free. It’s small but has an impressive collection of plundered antiquities, explained well. The 1891 model of the acropolis is nice. The museum was surprisingly busy and the lego model of Pompeii there at the moment is attracting noisy kids.

An admission up front. I did my postgraduate degree at the University of Sydney and over a five year period regularly walked past the entry to the museum without giving it a glance. Seven years later my teenage daughter asks if we can visit it while in Sydney.
I now regret having walked past so often without going in.
The collection is relatively small but each exhibit has a detailed description. The Egyptian section was my favourite but the other displays are also very good.
Definitely worth a visit with the added bonus of being free entry and you can also look around the quadrangle of the university.

My daughter came here for an excursion and she said it was better than she expected (for a musuem). She loved the lego creations of famous landmarks like the Acropolis and the Colosuem.

Quite by chance a friend mentioned the Nicholson Museum to me and I'm glad I made the effort to find it in the main quadrangle at the University of Sydney. (The Quad is worth a visit in itself.) The collection is based on one major gift in the mid-1800s and concentrates on artefacts from Egypt, Greece, Italy, Cyprus and the Near East. The were nine exhibitions, the three main ones being "Alpha & Omega - tales of transformation", Lego Pompeii and "Death Magic". The Museum is all on one level with interconnecting spaces and it was easy to work out a logical path around everything.
