Codnor Castle is no longer open to the public. It is now in private hands and the buuildings are being brought back into use as domestic dewllings. The ancient scheduled monument area around the fenced remaining ruins are protected now from damaging footfall brought about by the public using that area a a short cut over the surrounding field. The Castle was once the home of the De Gray family.

Tips for future walkers to Codnor Castle.
The site Codnor Castle and Castle Farm, which is agacent to the Castle both have been purchased and sit on private land. The Castle has been fenced off to protect the ancient scheduled monument and area around the Castle site as it is protected. The site has also suffered much vandalism and break-ins over recent years and this is still an ongoing problem as well as constant trespassing despite signs and information being erected around the site for public information.
If you are walking to Codnor Castle, please stick to the public rights of ways to avoid trespassing. Maps can be obtained for local rights of ways at DCC definitive maps. Thanks.

DO NOT GO!
The land has been bought by a very vicious and unreasonable man (pictured) who assaulted a friend of mine, claims the public footpath is for access only and basically no one is allowed to enjoy the view of Codnor Castle.
We, as we are allowed to do, travelled to Codnor to go for a nice walk and see these ruins, keeping to public footpaths the whole way.
It's worth noting that at no point did we cross into his land, we simply stopped on the public footpath to enjoy the view, we have confirmed this with the local police and we were 100% in the right.
We had also initially tried to de-escalate, reason and talk to the gentleman but without result.
He was beyond vicious and a genuine threat to anyone who goes to see this beautiful ruin, no matter how reasonable or sensible you are, he will not be.
He threatened to set his two dogs and us, threatened to send 'two big blokes' to come and deal with us and threatened to 'knock us out'.
He also followed us in his van whilst trying to ring people to try and hurt us further.
If this is what the area is like, move on and don't give Codnor your time or attention.
Move on to a nicer area, there far too many good walks and sites of historical value in the surrounding areas that you won't be missing out.

Codnor Castle is a major historical site, sadly nothing like as well known as it deserves. With a rich history stretching back over 800 years, the romantic and evocative ruins remaining are well worth a visit. It isn't easy to get to as cars are not allowed on the bridleway leading up to it but the walk from Codnor is a nice way to pass half an hour and the castle is well worth a visit. Ordinarily there are no facilities on site but the Codnor Castle Heritage Trust hold excellent open days monthly when this damn virus isn't with us and I'd highly recommend a visit to such an event when they re-start.

The splendid ancient ruins of Codnor Castle in the depths of the Erewash Valley in rural Derbyshire are certainly worth a visit... if you can find them.
Whilst in complete ruin now, the castle was built in the late 12th century and was inhabited from 1201 until the 1630s. The castle is supposedly one of the most haunted castles in England, but the spooks stayed away on the occasion of our visit.
Only some fragile remnants remain: parts of a three-storey keep, round towers, curtain wall, and the outer bailey on a lower level. So don’t expect a huge imposing stone construction with crenellations and a drawbridge over a moat (though the apparently was a moat on the castle’s eastern side). However, the ruins create an evocative site resplendent of times gone by, and they are lovely to visit. It’s private property these days and the most fragile parts are fenced off. It’s currently managed by the Codnor Castle Heritage Trust, and that organisations website provides considerable information about the castle and its programme of preservation.
A few reviews have commented on the difficulty of actually finding the spot. I tried to find it a few years ago, from the town of Codnor, with no success. This visit was with someone who had visited previously, so hopefully these directions will help.
We walked from the Thorn Tree Inn at the village of Woodlinkin on the A610, between Codnor and Aldercar. Opposite the Thorn Tree is a lane called Lodge Lane. Follow Lodge Lane to where it turns sharp right; don’t turn right, but keep walking straight ahead, across the fields, until you hit Castle Lane. Turn left onto Castle Lane and follow it along for about 300 yards. You’ll come to a stile; cross the stile and the ruins of the castle will come into view, 100 yards to the right. It took about 30 minutes, at a leisurely pace. We walked a different route back. From behind the castle we turned left onto a laneway that connected with paths heading more or less direct west, into the town of Codnor. The path comes out onto Alfreton Road in Codnor.
Enjoy your visit.

The ruins are splendid: romantic and tantalising on their lumpy perches. The views to the east over the Erewash valley and towards Nottinghamshire would be breathtaking if this part of the county had any distinguishing features.
Other reviewers have described the approach by car from Heanor. I live in featureless Nottinghamshire so I approach on foot. The trouble is that there are no signposts from the settlements in the valley. Although I now know the routes it’s easy to get lost, especially near the main railway line. If you are unfamiliar with the routes from the Erewash Vally but need to approach the ruins from that direction there are two straightforward routes. First, coming from the east, from Codnor find Monument Lane. Walk up it past the Jessops Monument. It’s steep. Once it is behind you and after the wide left hand curve look for a rough lane on the left and take it. It goes straight to the castle. The other route is from Brinsley. Follow the signposts to ‘Brinsley Gin’. (farm not a pub). Then follow the signposts to ‘Erewash Valley’. It gradually narrows to a path across fields and then the end of a road past dog kennels. Go up the road which in a mile or so brings you to the castle.
Sadly I have never seen any info boards, nor many visitors.

It’s a bit of a walk but well worth it. The people looking after the castle have done so much to the site it really is quite beautiful and hopefully in the not too distant future there will be a visitor centre. What’s really lovely about Codnor is the way the buildings have changed over time. It’s really easy to see the different styles as you walk around the site. There is lots to take in whether it’s the modern gatehouse towers or the different phases of the great hall. There are garderobes to look at and he old Tudor farm house. Most of all though take in the tranquility of the place and imagine what it was like when Medieval armies may have gathered here. The guidebook is also well worth the money.

Not really, especially at the moment as there is a problem with the right of way for traffic as local landowners are arguing over the private road access. But if the road was open it would still be impossible to get close to the castle as it’s fenced off.
