We seen this on trip advisor and thought, hey I’ve never been to a bridge that goes nowhere we should go and we did. It is really a bridge to nowhere that leads to an island which could only be described as nowhere and rocks. Sadly the lights also took forever which added to the sense of impending doom.

Well no wonder they call it the bridge to no where, as it just goes across the water to no where!! In saying that, you really see how clear the water is as you pass over the bridge, and it gives a great view of the silo’s.

The so-called Bridge to Nowhere is a curious single lane bridge sitting low over the Port Pirie Creek.

Other than fishermen accessing the ‘other side’, which many seem to do, t does provide some alternative and very interesting views of the town, the smelters the shipping and the lower Flinders Ranges.

I’ve always been surprised there isn’t any sort of development over there, given the views.

On our drive through from Murray Bridge to Port Augusta we had to drive over the "bridge to nowhere".
Look there isn't much to see but it was a good laugh and we got a nice photo :).

Passing through Port Pirie and caught sight of a sign "Bridge to Nowhere". Curiosity got the better of me and we travelled the bridge to find out something amazing! It does go somewhere!

The bridge crosses the Port Pirie Creek to a small peninsula which is undeveloped which was originally envisaged as an industrial development including tuna boat maintenance. lt was named the John Pirie Bridge on the 2lst of March in 1980. But the development never happened.

The bridge is single laned with traffic lights at either end with cars able to queue at either end. Once over the bridge the main turn is to the left and the bitumen road continues into a car park. The road changes to dirt and continues further round into another larger car park. The view of the back of the wharves with docked ships and smaller craft using the creek is a boat-watcher's delight. There is a boat ramp with the banks of "nowhere" used by fishermen casting and hoping to that big catch.

A small jetty gives both a better view of the ships and enable fishermen to cast into deeper waters. The mangroves support a range of fish and birdlife and I noticed a walking path heading away from the large carpark which appears to enable to explore part of the mangroves.

There are no facilities at all on "nowhere", with the closest toilets being back on "mainland" next to the start of the bridge. The views at night with the ships and the nearby silos lit would be awesome. Reason for returning at a later time!

Return? On the list to "do again" but at night for the reason above

Staying at the caravan park in our van a few times we used to enjoy listening to the singing swimmer in the mornings, The park is nice & clean, and close to the city of Port Pirie cafe's & restaurants

Having lived in Pirie for many years, we returned recently for a few days. This bridge was built many years ago, with rumours of what it's use would be, It had traffic lights at both ends, being single lane traffic only. Views are good from the other side

After much political wrangling this bridge was finally opened in 1980 and offically called the John Pirie Bridge but called the 'Bridge To Nowehere' by the locals. It was intended that the area over the bridge would be used for industrlai development but nothing ever happened and hence the name.It would be a long stretch to say this was a tourist attraction but it has interesting history.
