The Pyongyang Golf Club is located about thirty minutes outside of the city in a rural setting that befits its perceived exclusive status. The roads leading to the course were under construction when we went, necessitating frequent stops and disembarkments. Upon arrival I was a bit surprised to notice that I was the only one on the course (on a Saturday with the weather in the mid 70’s), outnumbered only by my entourage of two guides, a driver, and our caddy. Rental clubs were available and reasonably priced (about 30 Euro) while the green fee was a bit expensive (100 Euro).
Before I comment on the course itself I feel I do have to offer the caveat that I am a beginner golfer who picked up the clubs a little over three months from the day I teed off on this one. That aside, it seemed like a decent 18-hole championship course with somewhat narrow fairways, long grass off the fairways, and average greens. I believe a caddy is mandatory here and she was quite helpful. The front nine is a bit more picturesque than the back nine, with the former having several holes lakeside.
This was a memorable experience for several reasons. First, you are playing a game associated with exclusivity in the most totalitarian country on earth. The mere fact I can now say “The most distinctive course I’ve ever played on? Well that would have to be North Korea” is unique. Second, it was another example of the disconnect between the government and population in the country. The only golfer on the only course on a temperate Saturday in a country of 25 million people? That says it all. Third, it was one of the few times in my nine days in the DPRK that I got to interact on a regular basis with the locals. My guides also seemed a bit more relaxed and I have as many memories of my interactions with them as I do of the game itself.
It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, trust me.

The greens are well kept and for what it's worth, the staff showed great hospitality for our large group.

not sure if i'd call this a golf course. They have tried to host "international" championships of their own kind here but it doesn't work. The course is poorly designed and drains horribly.

Ono would never expect a golf course in DPRK! It seems that they have on average just a couple of players daily, mostly from China. Nice clubhouse, well maintained course.

A beautiful course with views of the lake. This is the course where Kim Il Sung shot many holes in one. Very nice clubhouse. Golf carts mandatory.
