Visited this small but informative museum several years ago as it was 'strategically' located between my hotel and the ICC.
Gave some valuable background and insights into the ugly history and practices of apartheid.
I'm glad to see that is still exists and highly recommend a visit if you stay in the area for a conference or otherwise.

The permanent exhibit added little to what you can find about apartheid South Africa in more comprehensive museums. The AIDS exhibit, which appeared to be temporary (but that wasn't clear) said something important about post-apartheid SA. The folly of the government in delay of treatment of AIDS was not overlooked at all. The exhibit emphasized the possibility of long life despite AIDS, and at least some docents were themselves is treatment.

This is a must-see museum in Durban. Set in one of the original Native Affairs buildings in Durban, the exhibits completely capture the absurdities of the Apartheid system, and the callous disregard for the human rights and needs of non-white South Africans. It made me glad to leave there and go to the beachfront to see people from all walks of life, races and religions strolling around without a care, eating ice creams. It made me glad to know that the past is behind us. I will take my children there next, so that they know how important it is that the mistakes of the past must never be repeated.

This is the place where work permits were obtained is you are looking for work in Durban during the apartheid period, sadly this was applying to Black only, the old generation becomes emotional when they visit this museum. it used to be very crowded with people looking for work permits and find work, potential employers used to come to this place to recruit workers.

Museum is small but is very interesting in showing how apartheid (and the policies that preceded apartheid) played out in Durban/KZN in what came to be known as 'The Durban system'. The museum is housed in the former premises of Durban’s Native Affairs Department where blacks people queued for passes.
Free entry. Well worth a visit

It is a small but interesting museum capturing the basics of Apartheid in Durban. Small room depicting the austere living conditions in the hostels. What I found interesting was how the townships around Durban was developed.Worth a visit if you are interested in History and the ravages of Colonialism.I visited on a Saturday morning. No entrance fee. There was no staff guiding and assisting tourist.Secured free parking on the side entrance.

You only understand how little you know if you have been to this museum. After the visit I had a better understanding of this region of South Africa.

Surprisingly there is a fee to enter when most other museums in Durban are free. However well worth a visit to understand the structure of racial segregation from a past era. Lots of documents that can be read.
