This museum is quite out of the ordinary. It provides a fascinating, in depth look at oil and the early days of the industry in this part of Arkansas. It uses the oil discovery and boom beginning in the 1920s in Arkansas to inform about oil itself as well as the early methods of obtaining it from the ground along with the way people of the time and place lived with it. Much of the exhibit area is life sized and "walk through".

I recently visited the museum and I'm highly impressed. Someone has done a lot of work because the attention to detail and the amount of history presented is nothing short of spectacular. I look forward to the next visit when I head down from Colorado

Our daughters thoroughly enjoyed their visit to this great museum! I can’t believe it is free! They especially loved the old timey town they could play in!

This museum is well worth a visit! Very informative displays tell the story of the oil boom in Smackover in the early 1920s that will give you an appreciation for just how hard people worked while attempting to make their fortune. The display includes a recreation of the downtown from that time (with period-correct vehicles and stores). Lots of info about oil drilling, timber harvesting, and bromine (a surprisingly interesting display!!).
The outside area is also worth checking out.

This is a great self guided tour, and the history of Smackover is really incredible. I highly recommend you swing by if you’re in the area. It gives a very in depth history of the 1920’s oil boom and the people that came to the area chasing that black gold.

The museum was well laid out and informative. There are oil derricks of various kinds on the grounds. The gift shop prices were reasonable.

This is an excellent State museum that is well worth a detour. South Arkansas had one of the earliest oil booms in the 20th Century, following the Spindletop discovery in Beaumont, TX. There are many exhibits that explain how oil was formed in underground formations that date back to the Jurassic and Cretaceous Eras. Communities were transformed by the oil boom that followed the discovery of oil. Later the brine that was also found, alone with the oil, became an important chemical industry in South Arkansas. Arkansas and Israel produce significant quantities of bromine, which is used in many products worldwide. There is also an exhibit about the timber industry in South Arkansas, which is also important to the economy. One of the most interesting exhibits is a recreation of a street in downtown Smackover from the 1920's. You can enter a movie theater, bank, jail, newspaper office, real estate office, etc. Outside the museum are several examples of the oil derricks and equipment from the 1920's. Everything is well done. The museum first opened in the 1980's and the exhibits have been changed and improved through the years. The Arkansas Museum of Natural Resources is located on 4 lane Highway 7, which connects El Dorado with Camden. It is a bypass around the town of Smackover, which was the main boom town in the area back in the 1920's. If you are traveling through South Arkansas you should stop and visit it. Admission is free.
