We receive a flyer for Twayla Tharp's anniversary production in San Diego, Spraekels auditorium downtown. Usually I'm a ballet aficionado andvsymphony but honestly I don't know much about modern dance except the name Alvin Albee and Twyla Tharp and Isadora Duncan so I don't want to miss a chance here. The theatre reminds me of the beautifully refurbished ( Canon) -and Wintergarden gems in Toronto, but this one is very New York and intimate. I like that.
There are three sets search about 20 minutes with 20 minute intermissions. The first is a collection of country dances with do-si- doh combinations, lifts and moves. Perfect for the fall season. Costumes are bright, dancing appears to be primarily balletic with surprising releases, flexed instead of pointed toes, energetic moves between pairs and quartets.
The next is based on music from Beethoven, the moves similar to the first but more complicated and entwined.
The last called Brahms Paganini is my favourite as a solo dancer excels in his dance, riveting the audience with the contrasts in the dance style. The next section follows with the ensemble who work together and apart, combining, balancing, juxtaposing one another. They are unique( to me), elegant, humorous, striking and I cannot take my eyes off them.
This is an amazing show, good for absolutely all ages and I reflect that my 8 year old grandson might have been fascinated by the dance. There are in deed a few young children here, as quiet and dazzled as the more mature.
I feel exuberant and somehow hopeful leaving the theatre so glad I have been a party to such a great performance.
My only thought is that music performed live might have increased the pleasure but then the focus might have been tipped towards the well known playing of the pieces as opposed to the dancers on stage. I like the absence of a set but tapped music gave me pause.
Thank you La Jolla music society for this wonderful evening.
