Took our G. Kids w passes from 2020. Quite a few rides where closed , because of employee shortage ! Zoo part was in good shape, I’m sure it’s been hard financially! Food was good, prices not bad. , wish they had one price for rides! But kids had a good day

I had something awful happen to my summer camp program today. This is the first time I have ever posted anything negative about a business on Facebook. I’m not posting this so that someone will lose their job or that a business will close down. I’m posting this because I love the children I care for, I love the families that I have offered a service to over the years, and because I don’t want this to happen to another child, a parent, grandparent, guardian, camp program, etc.
I understand the challenges that COVID has had on all of us. As adults, we’ve had to do what works best for our families. As a small business owner I’ve taken on tasks I never have expected. Everyone is under a tremendous amount of stress and change is really hard for some. I feel as a society we’ve adapted to those changes with as much of a positive attitude, self-reflection, our reaction- the list goes on and on. We all feel it.
Today, as I’ve done for ten plus years, I loaded up the vehicles with 16 children. These children have been with us for a full year and many of them for many years while we venture all around New England exploring, having fun and just allowing them to be kids. Are they loud? Do they run? Are they silly? Yes to all of the above. The one thing they are not is rude. Regularly I take them to restaurants where patrons stop and comment on how well behaved they are.
We arrived at York’s Wild Animal Kingdom in York, Me. today to explore the animals and go on rides. We have gone to York’s every year since Dean was little. The kids love the atmosphere, the rides and the treats to end the day. Unfortunately today something was different.
1. The workers were rude, grouchy, and mean to the kids. The kids were told to be quiet, to stop running and to stop talking. Again, they are kids 5-11. Really?
2. We addressed the ride attendant to which she did not apologize or explain why she felt it was ok to speak to the children in that way.
3. We went to the office to ask to speak with the manager and we’re told that as a staff, the job is to keep children safe. I have no issues with this. It’s my job too. A gentleman who claims he worked at the zoo for 40 years was also rude & disrespectful. When I asked him why he thought it was appropriate to speak to children in that way, he responded- “That’s what we do?” I was surprised. I simply wanted him to know that the children were treated unfairly by an adult. When I brought it up, he told me that the group had to leave. I asked for a refund which he refused. They
4. We were not allowed to see one animal. We arrived at 10:53 and left at 12:19. During that time we used the bathroom, ate lunch and went on one roller coaster. York’s has changed their pricing- which I understand, to accommodate for the loss they suffered last year. They now use a token system. One token is $1.00. It took 3 tokens for each child to ride the roller coaster. In total the fee was $48.00. For one ride!
5. The refund that I asked about was not given. All together the tokens and zoo entrance was $325.00.
Be aware, I suggest visiting other Maine businesses. York’s Wild Animal Kingdom, a staple for so many Maine families & organizations has become a place where money is more important than a smile on a child’s face or a giggle with excitement and I guess a run through an amusement park. Sad but true, please feel free to post and share this as often as you want. I wouldn’t want anyone else to have this experience.

Unfortunately, this isn’t much of a zoo at all. I actually felt bad for some of the animals, cuz their cages seemed too small for them or they seemed to not have any water :(. Additionally, I hate to say it but the fun park to me was kind of…pathetic. Everything just seemed old and run down.

Paid full price but at least half of area was closed! They also advertised camel rides but no one was running them. I asked an employee why and she said the camels were fine, the worker didn't want to do it. Not impressed.

Great visit with our 3 1/2 and 17 mo. old grandkids. For a zoo that's private and without any public funding they do a great job with a fine mix of animals. Most are close-up and the park is a nice size. Food is available and it's reasonably priced

At first we weren’t sure what we were getting in to. We had to walk through the building where video games go to die (dusty storage building). We were very happy to see monkeys playing when we exited the building. We loved the animals. The walk through parakeet exhibit was pretty awesome. They were all over our feet, it was wild. We were concerned that the goat feeding was done through a plastic tube. We were very happy to find out only a few goats had that. There’s a whole area of goats where you can go in with them and feed them. Caution, some of the goats can be a little aggressive when they want the food. The area to feed the deer was awesome too. The zoo itself could benefit from some up keep. The zoo keepers that we saw seemed to care for the animals and was cleaning and feeding them, so I’d say that’s more important than cut grass. I noticed they were hiring so they might be short employees to do the upkeep. The amusement park was not fully running, but my 5 year old grandson was absolutely thrilled with the roller coaster! He love the scrambler too. Most of the employees who ran the kiddie rides were very cheerful and very good with kids. Sad that the fun houses are not functioning. DO NOT waste your time & money on the mini golf. It is in desperate need of fixing, cleaning, and maintenance. Very poor condition. They should close that until necessary repairs can be done. Overall we had a good time and happy we checked it out.

On a very nice and great weather summer Saturday my family and I made a visit to York Wild Animal Kingdom. Over the years we have either walked through here or paid a visit. This is first time I’m doing a trip advisor review. To begin its not some modern day chain owned zoo and park, its privately owned and they heavily rely on the dollars you give to it.
I find the park divided into 2 sections. You have the gated zoo where you pay to get in. And the ungated walk through Amusement Park where rides are by the ticket/token. I will say right away, your money is worth the Zoo, NOT the amusement park. A lot of the rides are rather OLD and although they are upkept as best as possible, I do not find much investment in them. As of right now with staffing shortages in 2021, some of the rides aren’t even open for the season, the arcade is closed, and one section is gated off to access. Just a sign of the times!
The Zoo is really a much better section. All the animals here are healthy, energetic, eating, and some well interactive with guests. We do miss the changes with the deer encounter though, it used to open up so they could roam in a gated area with the guests but now they are fenced in a pen area. Some of the highlight animals for us were the otters, prairie dogs, deer, and goats. Of course there are many others. One comment I’d like to make is the employees really need to do better with upkeeping the grounds more frequently. Unoccupied pens had a lot of tall grass and some pathways seem to have greenery growing. Other than that daily operations are good....and you should definitely make a good half day here... spend the rest roaming York Beach, short sands is right on the doorstep!!!

The zoo is surprisingly large and has a wide variety of different animals. The enclosures are all nicely sized and many were quite larger than what I've seen as some larger and more well-known zoos. We had gone after days and days of rain, so there were some spots with very large puddles that we had to navigate around, but the staff was in the process of trying to remove the water.
Bring quarters to purchase feed for the ducks, goats, and deer!
The amusement park isn't the best. The rides are fine for smaller kids, but nothing really for older children. Stick with the zoo and skip the rides.
They post their hours daily on their Facebook page so you can easily check to see if they are open or closed during any inclement weather.

This is a review for the amusement part only since I didn't visit the zoo this trip. We were up York beach on our annual trip and decided to stroll through York's Wild Animal Kingdom's amusement park. I couldn't believe my eyes. WOW! I was visited this place just about every year since I was a kid and now I bring my our child. It's never been a great park but fine for a few fun rides and when my daughter was young they did have a lot of kiddie attractions. I honestly don't know why the park is even opened. I think I counted 6 rides opened. The park is half closed off with a bunch of abandoned rides and dilapidated game and food stands making it look like something out of a horror movie. We attempted to walk through and you can't you have to down down a narrow path near the slide and through the arcade which is not functional as well. Just a bunch of junk piled on top of each other. I don't know if they are planning on closing for remolding but they need to decide either way because it's awful at this point. I was kind giving it two stars because I really am hoping they can turn it around and I didn't go into the zoo. My expectations weren't high but it used to ok. It actually was pretty good got run down but then seemed to make a turnaround but this is by far the worst I've ever seen it,

Absolutely horrible this facility should be closed and condemned. Place any remaining animals in a facility that will care for them properly. Don’t spend the $ definitely not worth the admission price.

Most definitely. My husband had to have a hip replacement so walking a lot of long-distance can be tough for him and there are places to sit all over so he was able to enjoy a trip to the York zoo with our daughter last summer yet still not had his leg hurt
Can you bring in your own food and drinks

Yes, you can bring your own food, there were picnic tables all over the place. We brought a cooler, kept it in the car and then ate at the tables
Will this be open in October that's when we are going up for a vacation wait my family

It all depends on the weather believe it or not. At this point, they are open until the end of September, they have a calender on their website so you can check as you get closer.

The last day of operation for them is 9/25/16 for this calendar year.
Has anyone walked to the beach or downtown from here, while keeping your car parked at the zoo?

They have a package to buy for both. The Zoo takes time to go thru. Lots to see bring a stroller It depends on what you want to do and how much time you want to spend on rides or see the animals. Don't miss the butterfly exhibit. You can buy lunch or bring your on. You can walk down to the beach and leave your car there. They have a lot of kiddie rides and there is a measuring stick for a guide. Enjoy there are not many places left for this type of enjoyment. Also you can buy separate tickets for zoo or rides.

My grand daughter is 49 inches tall. Are most of the rides for kids 48 inches and under?

Does anyone think it's worth for a parent to pay for the rides? Most seem only for little ones so I didn't know if it was worth it.

Agree - if your kids can ride by themselves, you don't need a pass. If they can't, it's worth the small investment in an adult pass.

We are taking our granddaughters ages 2 & 4 on July 3rd. Would it be best to bring a stroller? Not sure how big of a place it is and don't want to end up carrying them if their little legs get tired. However, also don't know if it would be too packed to get around with a stroller. Do they have the coin operated machines to buy food for the kids to feed the animals? Are they quarter machines? Any other useful info. you can give me would be greatly appreciated. We are looking forward to a trip to make memories with them. We will also being taking them to Short Sands Beach on the 4th for the fireworks.

Stroller good idea. They rent them but may not have enough. Using stroller should be fine Strollers good visitors appear to be respectful for you to get by. They have quarter machines to buy food. Pet stores sell that food. Great place for families to make wonderful memories.
