This was a bonus historical find in the back of the neighborhood right off 6A. So fascinating to see how things worked historically.

Just up the road the Grist Mill had a series of paths that allow you to witness the fish ladders for 100,000 Herring that spawn here in the Spring. They can direct the water flow to make the waterwheel spin and have limited Saturday hours, from 10-2 pm, when the inside is open.
The parking is convenient and it's a free area and takes less than an hour to visit.

Humans have GPS. Herring have instinct!
The Stony Brook Mill is one of the most photogenic historic mills in the USA. During the annual Herring “run” thousand of Herring struggle up Stony Brook from the sea (Cape Cod Bay) to lay their eggs in the exact same pond where they hatched years ago. Many die trying to swim against the current and climb the “fish ladders” which help them rest after jumping upstream. During the several weeks of “the Herring run” as many as 20,000 Herring pass through the counters in every 24 hours. You will know when their are Herring when you see Herring Gulls circling above the Mill and longing the shores of Stony Brook and swallowing unlucky Herring whole!
Whether you bring a cell phone or fancycam, alone or with your fam it is fascinating to see this spectacle of nature.

They were all closed when we visited. It’s a nice little area in both sides on the road. There is a Parking lot across the Street from the Mill. The water pond near Mill had a lot of Herrings swimming around. Mr Pelican was perched on the rocks and I’ll be darn if we didn’t see him nab about a 10” Fish. He pecked and ate on it for about 10 minutes then got it by it’s head and slowly swallowed the fish whole ! Never have seen that before. Across the street you can tell by the Pelican poop everywhere they hang out there daily.

Great for the kids, especially when the herring are running. Very peaceful, until the gulls arrive to feast on the herring! The grist mill is nice from the outside, but in all my times visiting I have yet to see it open. Nice, short paths for a stroll.

When they open up the mill, to grind the corn, head over and sample their homemade cornbread and score a bag of freshly ground cornmeal. This spot is beautiful to watch the herring run and learn about this amazing aspect of nature.

We visited Stony Brook on a Saturday (only time when the mill is working) and were treated to fresh corn bread made with local cornmeal! It was impossible to resist buying some cornmeal (ground fresh) for ourselves and as gifts. Our 9-year-old loved the little museum upstairs, where she got to weave on a loom. The paths around the stream are beautiful, though we did not visit during herring season. It was a perfect quick visit before we had to hit the road back home.

It was cool to walk around and see the actual streams and pond area. The only drawbacks were missing the herring run and the actual mill being open on Saturdays only
