We rode part of the trail starting in Indian River and heading through Topinabee and toward Cheboygan. We've ridden a number of paved and unpaved trails around the state and this has to be one of the better ones in the unpaved category. The part that we rode was very scenic as it ran along Mullett lake with lake views and various interesting houses and cottages along the way. It is close to the road in places, but there was not a lot of traffic and was generally quiet.
We appreciated that both Indian River and Topinabee had facilities close to the trailheads including clean public toilets with running water. We will definitely come back on our next trip to the area and try riding all the way to Cheboygan and back!

Easy to park at the start of the trail. Town nice restrooms by the parking lot. We biked from Mackinaw City to Cheboygan and back. A well maintained trail, mostly gravel.
Cheboygan is a nice town to look around a bit and have a nice lunch. We ate at Nourish in Main St - recommend!
Happy Biking!

Our family took a 2 day ride from Gaylord to Mackinaw City on the North Central Trail. The trail is well groomed with crushed limestone, very few divits or potholes. Plenty of places to stop along the way in the towns. Stops in Wolverine or Indian River with tubing or kayaks to cool down. Public beach at Topinabee by the Library is a great stop on the way also. Cheboygan had great rest stop with clean bathrooms, picnic area, tire pump and bike repair tools. The MDOT park about 8 miles outside of Cheboygan had nice water pump/drinking fountain, picnic benches and views of Lake Huron. In 2 days we only came across about 30 people on the trail. Very peaceful. Best trail we have ridden.

I have walked the NCST every season, great clean place to walk. In the winter you can ski, but share with the snowmobiles, Many animals use the trail and I love to see them.

The south end of the North Central State Trail is in Gaylord offering bikers miles of riding enjoyment.
The trailhead is located off of Fairview Road, one mile north of downtown. Take North Center Ave and then turn left on Fairview Road. The trailhead will be on your right with convenient parking at the soccer complex.

I rode this trail from Gaylord north for about 13 miles and back again -- met only five bikers in 26+ miles. It's a well-maintained trail that is mostly straight and downhill until it meets up with the Sturgeon River where it becomes more scenic. Unfortunately that's the point where I had to turn around and ride back to Gaylord. This is not a difficult trail.

We are not super serious bycyclists, but decided to ride this trial bewtwen Macknaw City and Cheboygan. Clean, quiet, well kept. Hard pack gravel - had no trouble with by 30mm tires.

We rode from the Wolverine Trail head to Mackinac City. The crushed limestone proved harder to ride on than anticipated on our hybrid bikes. All the stops along the way had clean bathrooms and easy access to restaurants. This ride would have been MUCH more enjoyable had the trail been paved. As long as you are prepared to work a little harder, it's fine. I can typically maintain a 15/16 mph pace (hybrid bike) on paved roads, but could only maintain 10 mph for this trip on the crushed limestone. We enjoyed the stops in Topinabee and Indian River as well as biking around Mullett Lake.

We biked this trail between Mackinac City and Cheboygan. About 51 KM round trip. The trail was in good shape for a unpaved trail. Hard packed with a little loose gravel but very rideable with a hybrid or mountain bike. This trail is very straight, heavily tree lined and can become quite monotonous. For most of the way it is heavily tree lined on both sides which helps with the wind but prevents any views. There's a road side park about half-way with toilets and picnic table with a nice view of Mackinac Island from this park. In Cheboygan, there is no good signage indicating how to get to downtown. We did it without a map but some signs would be nice.

We were camping at Mill Creek Campground and I decided to check out downtown Mackinaw. The main strip was very crowded so I was glad I went by bike to check it out. This 2-3 mile stretch of trail was smooth crushed gravel until town where it changes to pavement. I was riding a hybrid and the gravel was fine.
