Wayland's Smithy is an easy drive for me, of a little under an hour. Set in beautiful Oxfordshire countryside it is wonderful site to visit. Just be aware that if you have a large 4x4 or RV/motorhome, the country lanes get very narrow. Parking is good at the purpose built English Heritage carpark but for non-members the cost is £2 for up to 2 hours or £4 for the day, otherwise access is free. From the carpark, Wayland's Smithy is an easy 2.3Km walk which took a half hour at a gentle pace, first along a maintained footpath across grazing land to a Bridleway which then joins the Ridgeway Route. The steps out of the carpark can be avoided by exiting the carpark to the road and turning left up the hill and joining the bridleway where the metalled road ends. There are a number of gates along the route but no stiles. The route to the site is well signed and is itself setback off the track and surrounded by trees. It can get busy, especially on Bank Holidays and the like, so it is worth getting there early (or late). We saw a lot of people with child buggies and bikes etc. and the site appears to be quite accessible for those with mobility issues.
The only thing which spoilt it was the number of people who were failing to pick up after their dogs. That said We found the Smithy itself well kept and strangely peaceful and quite tranquil and well worth the walk.

Definitely worth walking a little of the Ridgeway path just to see this burial mound. It has an aura OK

Fantastic example of a chambered and curbed long barrow. One of the most impressive Neolithic sites in Britain or the World.

One of my favorite places in England! When we visited Southern England, I knew I had to come here. Park in the White Horse car park and follow signs or use Google Maps. A powerful, evocative place. A long barrow with grass on top and around the sides, surrounded by beech trees.

The most evocative long barrow I've visited. You do have to put in a little effort to get here but it is so worth it. Fantastic.

What better place to stop on a walk along the Ridgeway than this. It is delightfully set among trees, has good information and can provide some shelter in places from the wind.

A delightful long barrow situated within an atmospheric grove of trees. It is well worth taking the time to walk around this ancient place and absorb the tranquil atmosphere, and appreciate the silence.
Accessible via a well posted mile long picturesque walk from the Uffington White Horse National Trust Car Park.
Dog friendly, perfect picnic spots, unfortunately no toilets available.
Note that car parking is free for National Trust Members or two pound charge for non members via ticket machine.

In amongst a wooded glade is this Pre-historic funeral barrow. It is quite large. You can only walk around it, not inside it but it is still an amazing monument to our ancestors.
