Despite the docent being out sick and not being able to climb into the kiva, we had a wonderful time. It was so interesting, after seeing petroglyphs in the morning, to then see so many of the same symbols in the murals.
In addition to the history, the views are beautiful.

Had such a great experience here on guided tour with volunteer, Margaret, who was so passionate about the site and Native American culture. We passed this site by many times because of the name, but it is really an opportunity to see a pre-written historic Native American Pueblo and descend into a kiva. Layers of murals were discovered on the plaster walls of the kiva. Those murals were painstakingly separated and preserved and are on display here. This alone makes this site unique and special. The gift shop carries items by local Native American artists and the clerk can tell you all about where they came from. The site is along the Rio Grande and you can walk down to the river. Definitely worth a visit! The tour was about 45 minutes. We spent a couple hours here total.

We were very fortunate to have the site to ourselves with a private docent tour of the restored Kiva paintings. The pueblo was occupied from about 1325 to end of 16th century. These murals represent one of the finest examples of pre-contact Native American art to be found anywhere in North America.
We climbed up a wood ladder and down a ladder into the Kiva itself. It was mystic. We had never seen such paintings previously. 17 layers of wall murals were removed and preserved and reproduction murals were painted on its reconstructed interiors. Many of the original murals are in the site’s visitor center museum.
No photographs are allowed in this kiva.

Very informative and interesting historical site. I had called ahead to inquire about the tours, which are only offered when a docent is available; but we were lucky to have John who was great. All of the staff was super friendly and helpful. There is a small gift shop we wanted to support but sadly it closed early the day of our visit.

We happen to arrive just a few minutes before the tour and we are so glad we did the tour. With out the information from the guide, so much would be missed. The tour was about 45 minutes and our guide was very knowledgeable! Great place to visit. Also, the Kiva here is easy to get in and out of and is part of the tour. It is much better than the one in Jemez where the ladder steps are too far apart.

The guides at the Coronado Historic site are personable and knowledgeable. The museum offers an insight into the history of Spanish colonization as well as the Pueblo way of life. The archeological site allows one to put history and actuality together. Incredibly interesting.

We happened to arrive right before a guided tour, and I highly recommend taking it. The tour added a lot of context and color to our visit - and it is the only way you can climb down into the reconstructed Kiva. The historic site has been excavated and reconstructed overtime with future plans to do more. The site is on the Pecos with a great Mountain View. Interesting history of the area and rounds out the history you know about.

Our tour guide was great and informative. It's not a vey long tour and I highly recommend it. It's the only chance to be able to see inside a sacred kiva. They were able to preserve the paintings inside the kiva and have them on display in a gallery off the the main building.

Glenn, our guide, was helpful, friendly and informative. We were told the tour would take about 45 minutes. We had several late comers and some were less mobile and quite inquisitive. We finally ducked out of the tour at an hour and 15 minutes. No fault of the site/tour guide though. Worth a stop, but allow a couple hours perhaps.

The exhibits are very well done. Especially the actual Kiva pairings which were removed from original excavation. The tour was informative with the ability to enter the restored kiva. Learning about the history of the native peoples gave me such an appreciation of their hard work and ingenuity. So sad to read about the Spanish enslavement and killing of peaceful farmers with the extinction of their customs and spiritual beliefs. this really was worth a couple of hours with the video, exhibits, tour and walk along the Rio Grande. Thank you to our tour guide!

It's been a while since I was there but yes some are handmade. Also on the patio on c certain days, local Pueblo folk come and sell their wares.

How much time is needed to visit the site? Do you have a may a guide? Or just give a tip?

To really see the site, allow a couple of hours at least. The guides are public employees and you need neither hire nor tip them. The guide we had was an archeology grad student who obviously loved what he was doing. The only cost was the small entry fee.
