During our visit, there were two exhibits open, both of which were excellent as well as different from what you'd get in most small city museums. Unfortunately, the third was in work, but sounded like it would be as interesting as the other rwo. The quality of exhibits was particularly impressive given the museum was free. Staff was very welcoming.

My husband and I had a little time to kill one afternoon so we stopped in the Farmington Museum. It was a really pleasant museum with a friendly staff. There were a couple of exhibits on the history of the area that were very informative. The gift shop had a good selection of books on the local area.

Our hotel recommended we stop here since I was looking for a New Mexican cookbook. The museum was not open but we could not tell that from the car since the times had changed. Anyhow, as we walked to the door, someone came to the door and when we told them we were looking for a cookbook, they invited us in. What great hospitality! The gift shop is wonderful with a large selection of NM cuisine cookbooks and other lovely gift items. I selected a beautiful Farm-to-Table cookbook and found some green and red chili pot holders made locally. Of course, the museum was not open so we could not tour, but from the few pictures we could see from the lobby, it looks very nice for a small town.

Visited while in area. Current exhibits feature Trex dinosaur skeleton and description/history. Other exhibits included oil/gas history and memorabilia from this area of NW New Mexico.
There is no charge to enter. Small gift shop is included inside.

Farmington Museum brings a wide variety of exhibits to an otherwise rural place where many would not be able to see things like a T-Rex or a sunken pirate ship.
The facility is beautiful and always kept clean, the staff is helpful.
There are spaces that can be rented for meetings or special events and there's also brochures and restaurant menus from all over the local area.
We bring the children to visit often.

Stunning building and river bed in the back, however, the exhibitions were a total disappointment.
In a place with so much history and archeological relevance, the museum exhibit gas pumps, oil cans, the work of a carpenter and a replica of a T Rex, on loan from another museum.
Very sad.

Very kind and courteous staff. Clean facility. No admission charge. Cool woodworking and petroleum exhibits. But “Stan” was the main attraction. T-Rex skeleton was really awesome.
The wonderful staff are a great resource to things in and around Farmington. Go here first and then plan you day!

This is a splendid example of a prime local museum. The layout is welcoming and the exhibitions range from quaint to awesome. In the latter category was the show of woodworking by the master artist and craftsman, Steven Barr. It will be there until the end of August and is truly a show of the finest artistry imaginable. Also, have a peek at the reconstructed T Rex.

May I bring my small, very well-behaved pooch into the museum? If not, and there's no shady parking, I won't be able to visit.

Bensalem: I didn't notice any signs about bringing dogs into the museum. I presume that only service dogs are allowed, though often that is overlooked if your dog is small and is carried in a dog carrier/bag.
There is an area behind the museum along the river that has a few shaded areas. Maybe your pup can hang out there while you visit.
This time of year, it won't be too hot to keep the pooch in your car. This past week has been in the 50s and 60s and overcast with some rain but each day is different...
I recommend calling ahead to see what they say.

How extensive is the Lost Egypt exhibit? (i.e., how many actual artifacts?) Is Jan. 4th still the last day to view it? Thanks!

I visited before the Lost Egypt exhibit was on display. There should be two rooms devoted to the exhibit, so I would guess about 20.The facility is a lot smaller than the Albuquerque museums, but the Farmington History and Oil Field history exhibits are well worth a visit in itself. I'm a Farmington native, and was very impressed with the accuracy and interesting details.
