THE MAIZE MAZE AND SUNFLOWERS - not listed separately but within sight of the castle! This is the best maze we’ve visited in years. Everything well organised and thought through. Whole site looks stunning with huge field of glorious sunflowers plus excellent and attractive signage in rural vintage style.
All ages enjoyed following the clear map to find the informative “stations” within the maze and collect stamps on our map cards. It made it more purposeful and enjoyable than just charging around to find the middle and then get out ( which is what typically happens in mazes!).
Afterwards we each got to choose and cut our own beautiful sunflowers.
Relaxed under welcoming shaded canopy and could enjoy our picnic seated on bales, or buy great coffee and food from Cowdray food cart. Kids could clamber on a maze of bales or use the piano in attractive sunflower photo shoot area.
A really great way to spend several hours. Staff were cheery, welcoming and deservedly chuffed about the whole set-up.
WELL DONE AND THANKS!!

Had no idea that the Castle existed but spotted the ruins in the distance as we parked nearby. A pleasant walk through marshland bought the ruins into focus. They are just that picturesque ruins. I imagined some recent tragedy overwhelming a titled family but it would appear they have been in this state since the 18th Century. Strange given the location and the various building frenzies that have occurred over the years. There seemed to be other buildings in the immediate area related to the site but they were closed. There were boards outlining the history of the site. Worth a visit and a pleasant walk

I've wanted to visit Cowdray for years and took the opportunity today to visit. As it was a spur-of-the-moment decision because I was in the area and decided to make a special detour, and I only had my phone with me, I was unaware that the actual ruins were closed off and only visible through an ugly fence, which made it very difficult to take nice photos. I was also unaware that the walled garden, which I'd particularly wanted to see, would be closed for a wedding - there were no signs in the car park to this effect, which I would have appreciated as I'm on the waiting list for a new knee and can't walk very far without pain. I was also disappointed that the visitor centre was closed, and that information boards hadn't been moved from the interior of the house so that they could be seen. I know a bit about the history of Cowdray, but without background knowledge, it's just an anonymous ruin. When other houses in the area are still fully open, it seems strange that this was effectively closed on such a lovely day (Midhurst was rammed with people, an opportunity missed surely), and it would have been nice tobe able to buy a guidebook or a history of the house. A cup of tea would have been even more welcome!

There isnt a lot left of the castle to be honest but very beautiful place to wander around. Bit of a walk from car parking areas. Lovely walled garden adjacent open to public.

The castle ruins are something that you just admire as you walk past and over the river. A significant fire burnt down the house & castle which you can only imagine was previously a plush regal building. Definitely one to capture a photo or two on your phone or camera.

No fee for looking, how wonderful.
Fire is so devastating and it’s a shame that there was not the funds at the time to make the repairs in 1793.
To think that this was first constructed in 1520 and here we are 500 years later.
Walking around the perimeter, one can only imagine what it would be like un damaged.

Our guide brought the ruins to life . He made it easy to imagine life in the “Castle” . A real treat during this limiting time thank you

Firstly can't believe someone has given this place a terrible all because it was closed! It doesn't need to be open, you can see quite clearly from the other side in the fencing and a quick search on Google gives all the amazing history. I have seen this driving through Midhurst so many times so it was great to explore further. It states £8 entry, so that was used on a lovely lunch, not that I would have paid to go in. Definitely recommend, some nice walks and picnic opportunities.

The ruins are not widely advertised or mapped anywhere, we only learned of their existence from the receptionist of the hotel we stayed at. Yet there is so much history at that place: Henry VIII, Edward VI and Elizabeth I all visited this once magnificent palace.

Parking is available either at Midhurst or further up at Easebourne, polo match days permitting, with a nice walk downhill and great overview of the castle.

Visiting during the pandemic we were only able to walk around these impressive ruins from behind the fenced area albeit for free. And watch the polo match.

This quaint and laid-back village is home to the Cowdray House. Some of its wall are still standing and the structure still retained its form albeit some portion has been destroyed during the war. It was a very interesting site to behold but unlike other castles with intact interiors, this one does not.

The place is ideal for a short walk or jog around. Shops and diners are a several kilometers away. Public transportation may pose a challenge.

Thanks for reviewing your recent visit to the original Cowdray House, which burnt down in 1793. The nearest public transport is at the bus terminus in town, a short walk away. We hope you come to visit us again soon.
