I visited this museum while it was in temporary facilities. I found the curator to be very knowledgeable and helpful. I had been born in this town and had outlived most of my relatives so finding someone that knew the area and the people was special to me. As a result, I donated many items including rare books and items that would enhance the various displays. But you do need to call first to make sure it will be open.
I did not find fault with the museum but with the City of Plymouth for posting on almost every street corner a marker or monument praising the Confederate Army of the Civil War and I could not find a single item that mentioned the Union Army in a positive manner.

We stopped in Plymouth on our way home for the specific purpose of visiting the museum. We arrived at about 11:30 am on a Friday only to find the doors locked. Although a car was in the parking lot, no one answered the door. We called the listed telephone number and no one answered. We looked at the ironclad replica on the waterfront and were walking back to our car when a woman came out of the museum. Although we called out to her, she did not respond, got into the car and drove away. She had left a Closed sign on the door indicating someone would return at 2 pm, too late for us to tour the museum.

Very disappointing as we drove a distance to visit only to find it closed and no one anywhere around. It was at 11AM on a Saturday morning and the sign on the door said open from 9a-3p. :-(

With a working model of the CSS Albemarle based out back on the river , a caboose, a freight car and the Museum building itself, an attractive location next to a park this is a great stop for something unique in American history.
The interior displays are original items from the era, including smokestack, cannon balls, various equipment and an able staff to help with your questions.
Definitely a STOP! 👍👍

Been a while since I'd been here...kinda forgot how cool it is...if your a fan of the Civil War like most of us Southerners are..
I think of this place every time I pass the ironcade on the river.
I think they still charge $3 bucks for adults.. Worth every penny..Tie the Battle of Bentonville NC with the Battle of Plymouth you can clearly see how bad our ancestors wanted to keep the Yankees out of North Carolina... (Maybe not as much as we want to today...Yankee's have ruined Raleigh)

Thoroughly enjoyed the small museum, great unique artifacts from local sunken ships and the battle. Helped to have some familiarity with the civil war for the exhibits. The museum is in a old train station. Don't miss stopping by the ironclad model outside!

Minimal entrance fee, really well done exhibits, suggest watching the "longer than 4 minutes" 4 minute video first...will help set the stage for the rest of the museum. Nice exhibits of ordnance, photographs, flag, etc. 3/8th scale ship is pretty cool too, but you cannot go on board that....display from a far only.

This is a great, although small, museum. Lots of artifacts relating to the civil war history of the area and great people! Definitely worth the trip!

This museum ir relatively small in comparison to it's contents. This place holds a treasure trove of artifacts and historical data from the Civil War and The Battle of Plymouth. During my visit here The Battle of Plymouth was being re-enacted by both Rebel and Union troops camped out all over the grounds near and around the Museum which occurred During April 17-20, 1864 and was the last major Confederate victory. A replica of the most successful Confederate Ironclad, the CSS Albemarle is berthed right by the Museum. I learned much about The Battle of Plymouth which was the third largest Civil War battle fought in North Carolina.

We found this when passing by town and seeing the design for the ironclad replica. The replica was amazing and made describing it easy to the family. The museum is small but has excellent displays. It is possible one of the most complete civil war artillery shell collections I have ever seen. It also contained items I have never seen before. The staff was friendly and knowledgable. This is a great stop.
