We saw the railway signposted off the A1 when we were looking for things to do in the area with our 19 month old grandson. What a stroke of luck. After a bit of a drive we got to Heatherslaw Station where there was plenty of parking even during October half term on a Saturday. We caught the 12 o'clock train to Etal which was a delightful village with castle ruins with a picnic area and a cafe and pub. The staff on the trains were very friendly and cheery and the trip went through beautiful countryside beside the river. Bunty the steam engine was working that day and it was a really enjoyable for all of us. Highly recommended.

A sweet little train running between Heatherslaw and Etal. You can join/get off at either end and there is parking at both. Both ends also has a turntable as it's single track, so you can watch the engine being turned (by hand). The journey runs along the side of the River Till and fields.

Well worth the effort to get here. It’s slightly off the beaten track but what a hidden gem of a place.
Located between the villages of Ford and Etal (each of which merit a visit too), the light railway runs from Heatherslaw to Etal and back, following the banks of the River Till. Look out for various wildlife along the 20/25 train ride each way.
At Heatherslaw there is also in indoor miniature railway and across the bridge is the Corn Mill which you can explore.
Well behaved dogs are welcome on the train and travel for free.
One tip: if you do as we did and get the penultimate train of the day to Etal and get off to explore Etal for an hour, be aware that when you go back for the last train of the day back to Heatherslaw the existing passengers won’t be getting off and it’ll be busier on the return trip. We got seated ok but just very busy, and we preferred a compartment for two as the dog can get anxious.

We had the most lovely train ride our little boy loved it. Staff on the train were very friendly and polite.
Not a 5 star, only because the stations didn't have much going on at all, espcially for little ones. Etal or Heathslaw. Both were very very quiet. No vibe at all.

April was a lovely time to travel on the railway as I’s sure it’s much more crowded in the summer. It’s fun to see the steam spewing out of this old world train as it chugs along the small gauge tracks. The guys who work on the train obviously get great joy taking care of the train. The towns at either end were are very charming.

A narrow gauge railway, built from scratch, the most northerly steam railway in England. The line runs from Heatherslaw to Etal Castle, a trip of around 2 miles. The line follows the River Till on one side and fields of cattle and sheep on the other. As we passed a field of sheep we noticed one lying on her back with legs kicking. This can kill a sheep. When we got to the end of the line we told the train crew who, on the way back stopped the train, jumped over the fence and turned the Ewe back on her feet. You don't get that on the East Coast Main Line! A very pleasant ride.

My first visit here. What a wonderful experience with such friendly staff. We were made very welcome to the railway whilst waiting for the train. The line which runs for about 2 miles travels alongside the river Till with lovely views. On arrival at Etal you can visit the castle ruins which are a few minutes walk from the station. Parking is available at Heatherslaw station. I’d definitely make a return visit here.

Part of a bigger complex which has a cafe and toilets this little railway is a must for a relaxing break through the countryside. Great staff and very friendly. They showed us their other steam locomotive currently being restored for service. If you want more than the railway then take time to look around the historic site before or after your train ride

Short but scenic steam train ride. Really helpful staff. Interesting things to see at each end of the journey in the Ford & Etal Estate.
