If you’re expecting a guided tour of a neolithic tomb, be prepared to be disappointed, because it involves 5-10 minutes crouching or bending over in a narrow passageway. However the friendly lady guide spends ages, and gives her all explaining everything beforehand, including her personal history :-) If not for her I’d have given this one star.

Visited the Tomb today and was fascinated to hear about the findings and the future possibilities - very exciting! Poor Hamish had to deal with another van load of free-loaders whilst we were there. Why do people feel they can park on private property to go for a walk and not go to the bistro or the tomb? Hugely entitled maybe? Keep up the good work, Hamish and it was lovely to chat with you.

After I had visited the prehistoric site “Tomb of the Otter“ in 2016, I returned in 2022 and was very disappointed about the owner‘s harsh, over-the-top reaction towards our late arrival. Certainly, Mr. Hamish Mowatt is entitled to insist on his right when to allow people access to his property (or not at all). However, advertising the place by sign-posting it with the reference to a bistro and car park, it may not be obvious to international tourists that the road leading to it belongs to Mr. Mowatt‘s property (and is absolutely not accessible outside opening hours). The grounds of a public restaurant and attached car park usually is accessible). In this context Mr. Mowatt’s rude and threatening reaction seems to be a demonstration of power and anger issues because he seems unable to make clear whether he wants to attract people to visit the site or not. I have never encountered an owner using parts of his property for commercial purposes implying that unwanted visitors “could be shot“ if they appear outside opening hours. It is a real shame.
In contrast to this experience, I miss the knowledgable and sophisticated woman whom I met in 2016 and who guided me through the tomb although the weather was bad and there was just one other person who showed up. She was able to give an evidence-based insight into the findings and made clear which issues had to be investigated further. Her considerate demeanour was very unlike Mr. Mowatt‘s repulsive behaviour.
Finally, Mr. Mowatt has lost two customers.

You need to be able to bend, crouch n crawl to enter/exit so I’d check you are comfy to do this before paying entry fee.

We came across this tour whilst visiting the Orkney Islands in our motorhome. On arrival we headed in to find out about the tour. We were greeted by a lovely young waitress (as the bistro is part of the business). She told us a tour had just started, so next one will be in about half an hour.
Whilst waiting the half hour, we decided to have our lunch in the motorhome. Suddenly a very rude and abrupt grey haired man knocked at our window and opened the door to our motorhome. "Are you booked on to the tour?" He asked rudely. We explained that we were told to return in half an hour. His response, "Good that's alright then as it takes the p@#s you're eating lunch here when we have a bistro". Again we explained that we were told to wait, so otherwise would have done the tour first then gone off somewhere else for our lunch. He still very rudely responded about how we were taking the p#@s. My partner then suggested that " shall we just f%#k off then and not bother with the tour?". He said something else and slammed our door shut. Within minutes a lady was out the bistro taking photos of us in the motorhome!!!!
We didn't want to miss the tour, and not sure at this point whether they were the same company or not, we decided to stay. Glad we did as the actual tomb tour was really interesting and the tour guide was amazing!
If it wasn't for the arrogant, rude and unpleasant man; Hamish, we would have given 5 stars - and you never know... we may have even gone in the bistro for a coffee and cake!!!

Disappointed the tomb was closed because of the pandemic 😷 but the bistro owned by the owner of the tomb was a welcome sight. Delicious seafood 🦞 and beautiful views all round.

The one-to-one tour was conducted by the owner of the tomb and consisted mostly of his passionately held but largely subjective opinion of the tomb and its contents: if you think you are paying money for a considered and research-based interpretion, beware. He was very scathing - in fact downright rude - about professional archaeologists he'd encountered. If I understood him correctly, he believed the dead had been dismembered by butchery (instead of sky burial or excarnation which is the more usual interpretation, see the excellent tomb of the eagles next door) and that they had subsequently been eaten in the tomb by otters. Possibly otters kept by the people for hunting purposes. The lack of any evidence for this on the bones (cut or tooth marks) he dismissed out of hand. Whilst theories not in the current mainstream could be correct, they need to be backed by fact and evidence and delivered in an objective manner. This was definitely not the case here.

This review is from a lady living in Orkney who knows the people at Orkney College and works as a volunteer archaeologist. Orkney College archaeology team wanted to take the cap stones away and remove all the bones. When they excavated the end chamber and removed the bones we were left with all the stones sitting out from the site. When we asked them if they were going to put these back we were told in no uncertain terms that wasn't their job. The bones taken out of the Tomb consisted of tiny finger bones of babies up to adult bones. This Tomb was used for families. The bodies could not have been put outside as there would not have been such small bones in the Tomb, they would have been lost if left outside the Tomb. The Tomb is full of layers of otter spraint. Otters are still here at the property as they were back 5,000 years ago. The owner is telling what was found in the Tomb so far, facts not theory, unlike other Tombs on Orkney that are empty and just theories. There are still 5 chambers unexcavated and ancient DNA is currently being conducted by the University of Copenhagen. The guide gives an honest view of what has happened so far but this person is just out to make trouble.

I visited the "Tomb of the Otters" this week while on a trip to the Orkneys. We spent about an hour here in all (we didn't eat) and I really enjoyed it.

We were first taken into a room alongside the bistro where a guide explained the history of the place, the discovery and the reason why otters are involved! We then had a chance to look at some of the artifacts and bones that have been extracted.

Finally we had a chance to look inside the tomb itself. It was quite a tight fit but well worth the effort. Our guide went in ahead of us and shone his torch around with more explanations of what we were looking at.

What I liked most of all was the relatively relaxed approach to the tour. Our guide, who had only been there a few weeks, was still able to explain everything in an interesting and engaging way. My 13 year old nephew found it interesting too!!

I don't know the name of the young man who acted as our guide but my thanks go to him for the fabulous job he did, especially as he'd only been there (from Leicester I think he said) for a few weeks when we visited.

We visited the tomb of the otters when on Orkney. A young man first of all gave us a very knowledgeable and interesting introduction explaining everything very clearly. He then took us round to the tomb and again enthralled us with his knowledge. Highly recommend a visit
