We were hoping to see inside San Cresci but unfortunately it was closed with no sign of anyone around. However, the views from there are beautiful and we had a relaxing walk instead along a nearby track without any traffic. A nice escape from the bustle of Florence!

Two artists purchased this property 25 years ago and have gone through trial and tribulation to abide by the historical commission rules in order to renovate according to authentic methods. The church dates from 945 and was a stop for religious pilgrims on their way from Florence to Siena, long before any of the local villages were in existence! Artists are accepted to spend 2 to 4 weeks in "Residency" to pursue their art in this isolated spot far up a very windy and steep unpaved road. (We got stuck trying to turn around on a damp road and feared falling off the edge of the road! NO guard rails) However what seems remote and hard-to-access provides perfect living conditions for artists needing to concentrate on their art ... and the area is even inhabited by several families in nearby homes. The nearby town of Montefiorelle is tiny, ancient, walled and COMPLETELY uncommercial -- an immediate step back in time with no time machine needed.

Our BandB, Podere Validbotte, suggested we stop here as it's right when you're approaching Greve. Drive up to the top of the hill. It's an old church "complex" that two artists have turned into an artist in residency program. The church has been restored and is worth a look. Then visit the artists in the "studio". A lovely young American painter warmly welcomed us and graciously spent a lot of time discussing the history behind the location and the program. We ended up chatting with her and another artist in the "backyard" with the owner's dog. The view is gorgeous. Definitely worth a 30-45 minute stop. Very unique.
