Brooklyn Navy Yard is a huge site with a long history stretching back to the beginning of the 19th century and was active until the mid 1960s. After some ups and downs it now seems to be a thriving home for various businesses and industries again, and one of the old buildings is dedicated to a free exhibition of the yard's history. It was bigger than I expected, spread over 3 floors. There are some model ships and a few artefacts but most of the displays consist of photographs and written text - all very interesting though, especially the timeline by the entrance. I wish more of the "old" site was visitable - I was interested to read about the large former hospital complex in the yard, and apparently many of these historic buildings are still standing but derelict. It is around a 20 minute walk to York St subway station, but I went there by ferry from Wall St pier (the Astoria ferry route) - it was about 10 minutes' sailing then a 10 minute walk through the navy yard to get the the exhibition building.

The Saturday-only guided walking tour provides an excellent overview of the Brooklyn Navy Yard's history and its current industrial usage now that the City of New York owns it. Our guide walked us through several of the century-old buildings, describing how they were used once to help the Navy build & maintain warships and are now used by a wide variety of industrial tenants.
We also got to visit the Yard's Building #92; now used to hold a museum with extensive timelines showing how the Yard has contributed to American history for ~200 years. Our tour took us to the roof of one of industrial buildings to see a bird's eye view of the whole yard and the various waterfront wharfs. Our final stop was to see the oldest dry dock (#1), which is still used these days to maintain Coast Guard cutters based in NYC.
The yard's remaining nautical usages are mostly for government river craft, such as the NYC Ferry system and the Fire Department. Note the Brooklyn Navy Yard is some distance (~15 minute walk) from the nearest subway station, so be prepared to do lots of walking to both get there and on the tour.

We took the Turnstile Tour of the Brooklyn Navy Yard and had Cindy as our guide. She was fantastic! We walked for a little over two hours to spots you can't get to on your own, views of the harbor, the drydocks, the museum, which ships were built during WW2, what businesses are at the area now (film and TV studios), she answered all of our questions and made the tour so enjoyable.

This is the largest remaining building from the old Brooklyn Navy Yards, now repurposed for peacetime uses. This building houses artist studios and a modest food market. Room to grow.

I was pleasantly surprised to find a good food market in this recycled building at the old Navy Yard. If you are in the area, you should take a look and you will probably buy some food products.

This is an important historic building in an historic area. I loved reading the signs that described how the navy yards evolved over the years. The repurposing of this building is nice and important.

Walked here from SoHo, across the Brooklyn Bridge. Took a while to get there but is well worth it for history and architecture buffs. Well preserved.

I went with other seniors on a guided tour in a van and loved every minute. The Brooklyn Navy Yard has a fascinating history from the 1700's through WW-II, and is now an exciting model of environmental sustainability with over 300 enterprising small businesses. We toured the area's exhibition center, grounds, dry docks, and food court for a great experience of past, present and future in NYC. PS: Some of our seniors had walkers and canes so I know a wheelchair entrance to Bldg. 92 is available. I don't think a donation is requested; there is a little gift shop area where I paid $10 for a great history of the Yard.
