Short trail is steep and more narrow than some, but mostly uses switchbacks so is doable for many. Take your time going back up. We did see a number of folks having a difficult time, having underestimated the steepness and altitude (mostly those with walking aids, inappropriate shoes or out of shape) - just know your limits/capabilities. Being on that landing just above the start of the Lower Falls is spectacular - to feel the power of the drop and look into the canyon - just amazing.

Very beautiful view but go down with good shoes because the path is steep and steep. The view at the top is magnificent and worth the 1/2 hour descent

Trail of reasonable difficulty where you can observe the Lower Falls waterfall facing the waterfalls.

This is my favorite view in Yellowstone. Great childhood memories and my goal was to hike the trail to Lower Falls below the overlook on this trip. I’m in my 50’s and moderately active. I live at 5200 altitude. I walk frequently so I wasn’t worried. The view is sooo worth it and the adventure!! It’s steep with a lot of steps. The trek up is slower for everyone. The altitude creates a pretty even playing field. Do it!

The Brink of the Lower Falls Trail is an approximately .08 mi/1.3 km down-and-back trail leading to a popular viewing area directly overlooking the Brink. My wife and I hiked this trail during the latter half of September 2022.
To reach the trailhead, head south from Canyon Junction along Grand Loop Road for about 1.2 mi/1.9 km and look for the North Rim Drive turnoff. This is a one-way road that takes you to four accessible views of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, the first of which is the Brink of the Lower Falls. NOTE that there are flush toilets adjacent to the parking lot. Also NOTE that during peak seasons the parking lot can fill up very quickly, so get there early or be prepared to park away from the trailhead.
As you approach the trail you will see a sign directing you either to the trail or the overlook (which is fully accessible; the trail is not). From there you will begin the 328 ft/100 m descent down 10 long switchbacks with a good deal of tree cover; it's pretty steep, so those with knee or hip issues may find this part a challenge. When you get to the bottom there is a viewing platform from which you are treated to three distinct and impressive views: In one direction there is the churning Yellowstone River as it rushes toward the fall, in the middle is the fall as it drops 308 ft/94 m into the canyon, and in the other direction is the Yellowstone River cutting its way through the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.
The return hike is a relentless ascent and seems longer than its 0.4 mi/.64 km. If you find yourself straining to continue, take your time and take frequent breaks as there are benches and rock walls where you can rest at the end of many of the switchbacks. The main message here is not to underestimate the hike just because it’s relatively short. It’s strenuous, but we felt the payoff was well worth the effort.

This was our first stop around the falls and canyon area and I’m so glad we started here. This isn’t the best view of the falls, but you get so close and are able to see them from a different perspective that you don’t see from any where else. Plus the hike is great. It was little tough, especially on the way up, but do able for our 4 year old.

I loved this little hike. If you are in shape, it is a nice little hike. There is a lot of elevation change with several switchbacks. If you are not in shape, you can still go as there are benches at the end of almost all the switchbacks to rest at on your way back to the top. The view of the falls at the bottom makes it all worthwhile.

The switchback hike is very well worth it to get to the brink of the Lower Falls. Powerful beauty. Plus, great over look at falls.

What can be said. It’s a great way to get close to these beautiful lower falls. Going down and up these switchbacks is hard. I and my 11 year old took a few breaks coming up. Still- it’s worth it. We continued to hike the full north rim trail. It was awesome. You can also just drive to this and hike down to the overlook. You won’t be sorry. It’s amazing if you enjoy water falls and rock canyon views.

The trail is not very long, but it winds down to the falls. The view from the bottom is great, but it is also very crowded. The hike back up is steep and exhausting.

I have COPD. How long a walk is the trail to the Brink of the falls?. What is the loss of altitude? Walking back would be the real problem.

From my review on 9/18: "The trail is about a mile round trip but there is a 600 feet change in elevation. Fortunately there are benches at the switchbacks so you can catch your breath on the way up. If you are out of shape, this trail will be a challenge."
