Less famous but valuable monastery - a hidden gem for me. Very unique frescoes for an orthodox church (innovative for the period when painted) and mostly well preserved.

Jako lepo mesto, mirno, tiho, uredjeno. Ima lepu prodavnicu suvenira i ikona. Lako je dostupan. Cuvena je ikona Bogorodice, cudotvorna. Najstariji je manastir u Backoj. Vredi da se poseti.

One of the most interesting places during our bus-tour in the western part of Bačka, in Vojvodina, was this monastery in Bođani.

The monastery was founded in 1478 by a merchant Bogdan, whose eyes were - according to the legend - miraculously cured when he washed them in a local spring. That first monastery was destroyed by the Ottomans in 1526 but was rebuilt in 1578. The second church perished at the end of the 17th century, during the reign of the Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I, but was rebuilt again in 1686, only to be destroyed by flood in 1711.

The current church, the fourth one, was built in 1722. The frescoes were painted by Hristofor Žefarović and are very rare, unique and valuable. Žefarović studied the book A Treatise on Painting by Leonardo and translated it into Greek. Probably under Leonardo's influence, he painted the frescoes on dry plaster, with oil paint.

Unfortunately, our group could only get a glimpse of the frescoes through the scaffoldings, as they were under restoration during our visit. The novice monk, our guide, asked us not to take pictures of the frescoes.

We also admired the outside of the church and the monastery buildings too. There is also a beautiful park around the monastery with some rare plants and we really enjoyed it!

Jedan od najlepsih manastira. Koliko znam ima samo 3 pravoslavna manastira u Backoj. Divan vrt. Stara crkva. Jako lep ikonostas.

Monastery is located in village Bodjani. In the monastery there is a spring of mineral water which is said to cure eye diseases. The monastery church in the Byzantine style, very nicely decorated.
